I tied the apron around my waist the way my mother had taught me.

Firmly.

Neatly.

Without fuss.

For the next eighty minutes, I served bread, filled water glasses, carried plates, and cleared dishes while Sheila’s table barely acknowledged me.

A few people thanked me.

Most did not.
