Wealthy Neighbors Removed My Trees So I Closed Their Access Road

Wealthy Neighbors Cut Down My Trees—So I Enforced My Rights

What started as a normal afternoon quickly turned into a dispute that tested both patience and principle.

In late September, my sister Mara called me in a panic. I left work immediately and headed to our family property on Pine Hollow Road. When I arrived, the sight stopped me cold—six large sycamore trees along our eastern boundary had been completely cut down. Some of those trees had stood there for decades, including three planted by my father when I was a child. Now, only stumps remained.

The crew responsible had been hired by the homeowners association of Cedar Ridge Estates, a neighborhood located uphill from our land. Their president, Gordon Hale, had ordered the trees removed to improve the view for the homes in the development.

When I confronted him, he dismissed my concerns and claimed their property survey gave them the right to clear the area. But I knew that wasn’t true. My family had carefully documented the boundaries and agreements tied to that land. In particular, a road easement established years ago allowed the neighborhood to pass through Pine Hollow Road—but clearly stated that no alterations to our property were permitted.

I contacted a real estate attorney, Denise Alvarez, who confirmed that the tree removal was an unauthorized action and a violation of that agreement.

The next morning, I took steps to protect what remained. I marked the boundary clearly and secured access to the road with a chain, restricting residential use while still allowing emergency access. The response from the neighborhood was immediate frustration, but local authorities confirmed that I was acting within my legal rights.

Soon after, an independent county survey verified what we already knew—the trees had been entirely on our property.

Faced with the legal consequences of their actions, the homeowners association agreed to a settlement. As part of it, they arranged for the planting of twelve mature sycamore trees along the boundary, restoring—and even strengthening—the natural barrier that had been removed.

Once everything was resolved, I reopened access to the road.

The situation served as a clear reminder: property agreements exist for a reason, and respecting boundaries—both legal and personal—is essential.
