Keith Urban marked Dolly Parton’s 80th birthday with a heartfelt tribute that blended nostalgia, gratitude, and genuine admiration.

On Monday, Urban shared a special video message that opened with an audio recording from his childhood: a 10-year-old Keith Urban playing banjo and singing “Applejack,” a song Parton wrote and released in 1977. The moment felt intimate and full circle — a reminder of how long Dolly’s music has inspired generations of artists.

Smiling into the camera, Urban followed the clip with a personal message directed straight to the country legend:

“I’m just here to say you’ve been a massive inspiration to me for a long time, Dolly. And God, thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve ever done.”

Urban went on to praise not just Parton’s music, but the spirit behind it — her generosity, curiosity, and humanity.

“Just the goodness that you’ve brought into the world with your heart and your curiosity and your passion and your insane musical gift,” he said.

He ended the tribute with warmth and affection, wishing her many more years ahead before adding simply:

    “I love you, Dolly.”

The message resonated deeply with fans, especially given the long-standing mutual admiration between the two artists. Their connection dates back decades, including a memorable 2010 performance of George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” alongside Vince Gill.

That night, Dolly introduced Urban with her trademark humor and warmth, joking:

“I know his momma used to spend a lot of time over here, and I felt like he was kind of lonesome all that way from home. And I wrote him a note one time and said, ‘Well, I can be your other mother, your other lover or the sister you never wanted.’
I never heard back from him on that.”

The two also collaborated musically in 2005, recording a bluegrass-tinged version of “The Twelfth of Never” for Parton’s duets album Those Were the Days, further cementing their artistic bond.

Keith Urban’s birthday message wasn’t flashy or overproduced — and that’s what made it so powerful. It came from a place of lifelong inspiration, respect, and gratitude, echoing the sentiment shared by countless artists whose lives and careers have been shaped by Dolly Parton’s music and heart.

At 80 years old, Dolly continues to be exactly what Urban described: a source of light, generosity, and immeasurable inspiration — and the love she receives in return says everything.
