Parker McCollum Opens Up About Fatherhood, Family Plans, and Why He Refuses to Write “Dad Songs”
Parker McCollum has never been more honest — or more joyful — than he is right now. While co-hosting Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton from his wife Hallie Ray Light McCollum’s family home in Oklahoma, the Texas-born country star opened up about life with his 15-month-old son, Major Yancey Tyler McCollum. And according to Parker, fatherhood has changed everything… except his songwriting.
“I Didn’t Know Life Could Get This Good”
Major, born on August 8, 2024, has officially become the center of the McCollums’ world. Parker laughed as he described the toddler’s fearless personality:
“He’s a wild animal… he’s full go. He’s got a different bump or bruise every day. He’s a show-off. He knows when girls are around. Hopefully he’ll be more like his mama. I didn’t know life could get this good.”
The proud dad has called fatherhood “the greatest thing ever,” and now says that becoming a parent has given him a deeper purpose than he ever imagined.
A Life-Changing Realization
Parker explained that he has always been the type to question everything — to want reasons, answers, purpose. But that changed the moment he held his son.
“I was sitting there looking at him and realized: that’s why. That’s why we’re here. It puts a lot in perspective.”
It’s the kind of grounding moment many new parents know well, and McCollum says it hit him harder than he expected.

When asked whether he and Hallie Ray plan to have more children, Parker didn’t hesitate:
“Hallie Ray is already talking about number two. I kid with her, ‘This one’s not good enough?’ But I know I will lose that argument. It’s already been lost.”
The couple has openly embraced parenthood — and with friends like fellow country star Koe Wetzel, who also became a father this year, Parker says it helps to know he’s not learning everything alone.
The Beautiful Chaos of Being a New Dad
McCollum admits he was overwhelmed at first, describing the flood of emotions when Major was born as “mind-blowing.”
He and Koe bonded recently over their shared experiences:
“Everything people say about having kids is a thousand percent true… as soon as you get over one obstacle, it’s another ridiculous one. But it’s the greatest thing ever.”

Even though fatherhood has changed his daily life, McCollum insists it will not change his music — at least not directly.
“No. No dad songs,” he said on Taste of Country Nights.
“I would never sit down and try to write a dad song. It’s hard to do without being cheesy, and if I were to write one about my son, it’d have to be really special.”
Surprisingly, he says becoming a father hasn’t shifted his creative voice at all:
“My songwriting hasn’t changed. It’s two totally separate things for me. I’m still out there chasing it — still trying to make it. Every time I sit down with a guitar, that’s the kid in me that shows up.”
His latest album, Parker McCollum — released June 27 — is proof of that: authentic, driven, and focused on the craft above all else.
A Father, A Husband, and Still a Dreamer
Despite the new responsibilities and the sleepless nights, Parker hasn’t lost the fire that got him here. He says fatherhood hasn’t slowed him down — if anything, it’s sharpened his focus.
He’s determined to keep writing, keep hustling, and keep showing up for his fans… and for his family.
It’s clear that Parker McCollum is in the middle of the most meaningful season of his life. And whether baby #2 arrives sooner or later, one thing is certain:
