Two Detectives Who Can’t Hear or See, Trip Over Everything, and Somehow Solve a Case—Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman at Comedy Gold in the “Injured Detectives” Sketch

Carol Burnett & Harvey Korman Deliver Comic Perfection in “Injured Detectives”

A Masterclass in Old-School Comedy

If you grew up watching The Carol Burnett Show, you know that every episode delivered something unforgettable — but few sketches capture the show’s trademark blend of slapstick and wordplay like “Injured Detectives.”

In this side-splitting bit, Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman star as two hopeless detectives whose “injuries” make them hilariously unfit for the job. One can barely see, the other can’t hear a thing — and somehow, they’re supposed to solve a crime. Add in Vicki Lawrence as their increasingly frustrated client, and you’ve got a setup that’s pure comedic gold.

Chaos, Confusion, and Perfect Timing

The humor starts the moment the detectives walk — or rather, stumble — into the room. Harvey’s detective keeps missing obvious clues, squinting at everything from inches away, while Carol’s character mishears every line in ways that defy logic.

Their back-and-forth misunderstandings are a masterclass in timing:

“Did you say gunshot?”
“No, I said sunspot!”

Cue the audience laughter that only grew louder with each absurd mix-up.

Meanwhile, Vicki Lawrence stands in the corner, her deadpan reactions adding another layer of hilarity as she tries (and fails) to keep the investigation on track. Every eye-roll, sigh, and sarcastic retort hits like a punchline.

Why It Still Works Decades Later

What made The Carol Burnett Show timeless was its simplicity. There were no big budgets, no CGI, no elaborate effects — just brilliant performers who knew how to make comedy look effortless.

“Injured Detectives” was physical humor at its finest: pratfalls, exaggerated expressions, and a rhythm that built to beautiful chaos. You could feel how much fun the cast was having, and that energy spilled right through the screen.

It’s also one of those sketches that perfectly captures the show’s spirit — smart, silly, and wholesome all at once. Carol and Harvey were the definition of chemistry, turning every mistake or giggle into part of the show’s magic.

A Legacy of Laughter

Looking back, sketches like this remind us why The Carol Burnett Show is still celebrated as one of TV’s greatest comedies. It took ordinary scenarios — a doctor’s visit, a movie set, a detective’s office — and turned them into laugh-out-loud masterpieces that never get old.
