“I’ll See You Again Someday”: Carrie Underwood Mourns Nashville Songwriting Legend Brett James

“Brett, I can’t believe you’re gone… I’ll see you again someday.” With those words, Carrie Underwood honored not just a collaborator, but a dear friend and one of Nashville’s most beloved songwriters. On September 18, tragedy struck when Brett James, his wife, and stepdaughter lost their lives in a plane crash in North Carolina. At just 57 years old, the country music world lost a man whose songs shaped a generation—and whose spirit left a mark on everyone he met.

    A Tragic Loss

According to officials in Macon County, North Carolina, the Cirrus SR22T plane (tail number N218VB) departed from Nashville’s John C. Tune Airport before crashing near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Franklin. While everyone on the ground was safe, all three passengers on board perished. The aircraft was registered to James, whose full name was Brett James Cornelius.

The news sent shockwaves through Nashville. Songwriters, artists, and fans alike poured out tributes for a man often described as “the heartbeat behind the hits.”

From Med School to Music Greatness

Brett James didn’t start out chasing fame—he left medical school at the University of Oklahoma to follow his true passion: music. His self-titled debut album, released in 1995, produced the charting singles “Chasing Amy” and “After All,” earning him a deal with Arista Nashville.

Though his own recording career was brief, his genius truly emerged as a songwriter. Even after briefly returning to medical school, James continued to fulfill a songwriting contract—and soon became one of country music’s most successful hitmakers.

Over the years, he penned 27 No. 1 hits, including:

“Jesus, Take the Wheel” – Carrie Underwood

“When the Sun Goes Down” and “Out Last Night” – Kenny Chesney

    “The Truth” – Jason Aldean

“The Man I Want To Be” – Chris Young

    “Somethin’ Bad” – Miranda Lambert

His range extended beyond Nashville, writing for Bon Jovi and the Backstreet Boys, blending heart and craft across genres. In 2020, his extraordinary impact earned him induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

    Carrie Underwood’s Emotional Tribute

Carrie Underwood, who co-wrote several of her defining songs with James—including “Flat On The Floor,” “Cowboy Casanova,” “Game On,” “Love Wins,” and “Something In The Water”—shared a heartfelt message following his passing:

“Some things are just unfathomable. The loss of Brett James to his family, friends, and our music community is too great to put into words… Brett loved the Lord. We even had the pleasure of singing together at church. My favorite songs to sing of ours are the ones that he or we wrote about Jesus because the thoughts and feelings behind them are so genuine and pure. I won’t ever sing one note of them again without thinking of him… Love you, man. I’ll see you again someday.”

Her words painted a picture of a man defined not just by his success, but by his faith and compassion. Fans echoed her grief, flooding social media with tributes, many noting how “Jesus, Take the Wheel” now feels even more poignant.

    A Legacy That Won’t Fade

Brett James’s life was a testament to following your calling and using your gifts to uplift others. He may have left this world far too soon, but his songs—filled with honesty, hope, and humanity—will live on for generations.

As Carrie’s tribute so beautifully reminds us, music can outlast even the deepest heartbreak. Through every lyric and melody he wrote, Brett James continues to speak to the soul of country music.

Rest easy, Brett. Your songs—and your spirit—will never stop playing.
