Into the Silence: The Disappearance of Garrett and Della Beckwith

    A Father–Daughter Adventure

In the summer of 2012, Garrett Beckwith and his 19-year-old daughter Della packed their gear for what should have been another unforgettable outdoor adventure. For years, the pair had shared a love of climbing, hiking, and testing their endurance against the raw beauty of America’s wilderness. Their chosen challenge this time was Mount Hooker, a towering granite wall in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, known for its sheer cliffs and remote, unforgiving terrain.

For Garrett, the trip was a chance to strengthen the father–daughter bond forged through nature. For Della, it was the thrill of pushing herself to new limits alongside the man who had taught her to climb. But the journey that began in anticipation of triumph would never find its return.

    The Mountain

Mount Hooker is not an easy climb. Rising nearly 12,500 feet, its north face is among the most challenging big-wall ascents in the continental United States. The approach alone requires days of trekking through rugged backcountry, far from cell towers or rescue stations. Climbers who attempt it know they are stepping into one of the wildest corners of the Rockies, where weather shifts suddenly and mistakes can prove fatal.

    Vanishing Without a Trace

Garrett and Della were last seen setting out on their climb. When they failed to return as planned, family and friends raised the alarm. Search-and-rescue teams combed the area, deploying helicopters, dogs, and ground crews. The search lasted for weeks, but no sign of father or daughter was ever found—not gear, not rope, not clothing. It was as if the mountain had swallowed them whole.

    Theories and Questions

Over the years, speculation has filled the silence. Some believe they may have fallen during their ascent, their bodies hidden by crevasses or buried beneath rockslides. Others wonder whether a sudden storm forced them off course. With Mount Hooker’s remote location, the possibility that they simply vanished into terrain too vast to scour remains hauntingly real.

    The Legacy of Loss

For their family, the pain is compounded by the lack of closure. To lose loved ones is devastating; to never know how or why is a wound that resists healing. Yet Garrett and Della are remembered not only for how they disappeared, but for how they lived—bound together by a love of adventure, of the outdoors, and of each other.

    A Mountain That Remembers

A decade later, their disappearance remains one of Wyoming’s enduring mysteries. Mount Hooker still stands, its granite face unyielding, a place of awe for climbers and sorrow for the Beckwith family. Each year, new climbers attempt its walls, carrying with them not just ropes and chalk but also the memory of those who never came back.
