‘I Never Thought I’d Have to Say Goodbye This Soon’: ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’ Songwriter Brett James Faces Heartbreak as Wife and Stepdaughter Die in Tragic North Carolina Plane Crash

A Tragedy That Shook Country Music

The plane crash that claimed the life of Brett James also took away his wife and stepdaughter, making an already devastating loss even heavier for the country community. On September 18, James — the Grammy-winning songwriter behind “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “The Truth,” and countless others — died when his Cirrus SR22T went down in Franklin, North Carolina. He was 57. His wife, Melody Carole Wilson, and her daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson, were also on board. None survived.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. just west of Iotla Valley Elementary School. Though no children or staff were harmed, Nashville lost three beloved lives in an instant.

    A Family Story Cut Short

Melody and Brett married in August 2021, celebrating their honeymoon in Tulum. She often shared their blended family’s journey on Instagram, with posts that revealed her pride in her daughter Meryl. Just two days before the crash, Melody posted a birthday tribute for Meryl, who had turned 28 and was marking 142 days sober. “How blessed am I to be your momma,” she wrote — a message that now stands as a final, heartbreaking gift of love.

James himself credited Melody with inspiring his creativity. Speaking about her influence when releasing his I Am Now EP in 2020, he described her as “a deep soul and a real musical human” whose taste shaped him in later years.

A Legacy of Songs and Faith

For fans, Brett James will forever be remembered through his songs. He penned Carrie Underwood’s defining anthem “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” Jason Aldean’s “The Truth,” Dierks Bentley’s “I Hold On,” Kenny Chesney’s “When the Sun Goes Down,” and Rascal Flatts’ “Summer Nights.” More than 800 of his songs were recorded, over 25 became No. 1 hits, and in 2020 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Yet behind the hits was a man defined just as much by family and faith. He raised four children with his first wife, Sandra Cornelius-Little, and found new love with Melody, blending their lives together. Friends and colleagues describe him not only as a prolific writer, but as a mentor, a believer, and a generous soul who gave back as much as he created.

    Tributes and an Unfillable Loss

Carrie Underwood called his death “unfathomable,” finding comfort only in knowing that Brett “loved the Lord.” Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Sara Evans, and many others echoed the same: Brett James was more than a songwriter — he was a friend, a guide, and a man of rare integrity.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but the void it leaves is already clear. Nashville has lost one of its finest writers, and a family whose story carried love, faith, and resilience to the very end.

    The Song Still Sings

It is hard to believe Brett, Melody, and Meryl are gone. Yet every chorus Brett wrote and every life they touched keeps their story alive. The family may have taken their final flight, but their legacy continues to echo — in music, in faith, and in the hearts of everyone who knew them.
