Lainey Wilson Turns the Night She Met Fiancé “Duck” Hodges Into a Love Song
Lainey Wilson has never shied away from putting her real life into her music, but her new song, “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” may be her most personal yet.
The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year is sharing the story of how she first met her fiancé, former NFL quarterback Devlin “Duck” Hodges, through the lyrics of the heartfelt track.
A Love Story in Song
The ballad takes listeners back to 2021 at Silverado Dance Hall & Saloon in Nashville — the now-closed honky-tonk where the two were introduced by a mutual friend. As Wilson recalls in the opening verse, the night was filled with Southern charm and free beer, but the real highlight was that first spark between her and Hodges:
“Catfish shack, feeding ducks on the water / Alabama son and a Louisiana daughter / Summer heatwave don’t get much hotter / Than the burn in that first kiss…”
The chorus captures Wilson’s wish to relive the moment over and over, describing the kind of love that makes time stand still. By the end, she even sings she’d skip holidays like Christmas or the Fourth of July if it meant more days by his side.
Duck: Her Songwriting Muse
For Wilson, Hodges has become more than a partner — he’s also a creative spark. Along with inspiring “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” he’s also behind tracks like “4X4XU,” “Counting Chickens,” and “Hang Tight Honey.”
“He makes it real easy to write love songs,” Wilson told Music Mayhem. “I found me somebody who is my biggest cheerleader, my best friend, somebody who is in my corner no matter what.”
From First Kiss to Wedding Plans
Since that night in 2021, the couple has made countless red carpet appearances, gotten engaged, and are now preparing for their wedding. Wilson admits that nothing will top the memory of their first night together “’til we tying that knot at the altar.”
Whirlwind Deluxe Edition
The track appears as Track 17 on the newly released deluxe edition of Whirlwind — a 19-song project that expands on her acclaimed 2024 album. Alongside “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” the new tracks include “Bell Bottoms Up,” “King Ranch, King George, King James,” “Peace, Love, and Cowboys,” and her current single, “Somewhere Over Laredo.”
“This story wasn’t quite finished yet,” Wilson wrote in a social post. “I wrote these last five songs when the dust was starting to settle a little bit. Now I’m starting to feel it pick back up with the kick off of my Whirlwind World Tour.”
On the Road
Wilson is currently headlining her biggest trek yet, the Whirlwind World Tour, with support from Muscadine Bloodline, Kaitlin Butts, Maddox Batson, Drake Milligan, Lauren Watkins, and Zach Meadows on select dates. The tour spans arenas and amphitheaters across North America and Europe.
