Breanna Nix Delivers an Emotional Powerhouse Performance on American Idol’s Judges’ Choice Night
Monday night’s (May 5) episode of American Idol Season 23 saw the Top 8 contestants return to the stage for Judges’ Choice Night, where each singer picked from a set of three songs secretly selected by judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.
Among the standout performances was Breanna Nix, who delivered a stirring rendition of Martina McBride’s “Independence Day”—a powerful choice with deeply personal meaning.
A Song That Hit Home
Fresh off her praised Adele cover on Ladies Night, Breanna shifted gears into country territory for the first time with “Independence Day.” It wasn’t just a stylistic risk—it was an emotional one.
The stay-at-home mom revealed the song reminds her of her mother, a domestic abuse survivor, and she teared up as she shared the backstory. With raw emotion in every note, Breanna pushed through a slight stumble in the lyrics and still delivered a breathtaking performance.
Carrie Underwood said: “It was a good song choice. You tripped up…but didn’t miss a beat.”
Lionel Richie added: “You know your voice so well. Those high notes are out of this stratosphere.”
Luke Bryan praised her vocal control: “That is an amazingly challenging song. The ease with which you hit those high notes was tremendous.”
When asked to guess which judge had chosen “Independence Day” for her, Breanna nailed it: Luke Bryan.

Yes—America voted Breanna through to the next round, placing her in the Top 7 alongside Slater Nalley, Thunderstorm Artis, Gabby Samone, Jamal Roberts, and John Foster.
That left Mattie Pruitt and Josh King in danger. When the judges—Luke and Lionel—had to choose a wildcard, Josh King subtly motioned toward Mattie, signaling that she should be saved. The judges respected his gesture and gave Mattie the final spot in the Top 7.
