Toby Keith’s Final TV Performance at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards Will Hit You Right in the Soul as He Fights Cancer and Leaves the Stage a Legend

Toby Keith Delivers Powerful Final Performance at 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards
On September 28, 2023, the country music world stood still as Toby Keith took the stage at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards—his first major public appearance since announcing his battle with stomach cancer in June 2022. The night would go on to deliver one of the most moving performances of his storied career.

Honored with the Country Icon Award, Keith was celebrated for decades of impact through timeless hits like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “American Soldier.” Ever the showman, he lightened the atmosphere with a joke about squeezing into his skinny jeans, then shifted the mood entirely with a raw, soul-stirring rendition of “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

Originally released in 2019, the song now carried a heavier weight, reflecting Keith’s personal fight against illness with haunting clarity.

“Don’t let the old man in
I want to live me some more
Can’t leave it up to him
He’s knocking on my door…”

As the lyrics echoed through the hall, the emotional gravity of the moment was unmistakable. Keith’s voice, rich with life experience and quiet defiance, resonated deeply with fans, fellow musicians, and especially his wife, Tricia Lucus, who was seen wiping away tears during the performance.

By the final verse, Keith himself appeared visibly moved, his eyes welling up—underscoring just how personal the song had become.

“Ask yourself how old would you be
If you didn’t know the day you were born…”

The moment became more than just a performance; it was a final statement of strength and dignity from a man who had spent a career standing tall.

Sadly, Toby Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, after a courageous fight with stomach cancer. But his legacy—of grit, humor, patriotism, and deeply human songs—lives on. His performance of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” now stands as a powerful final chapter in a life that gave so much to country music.

“Look out your window and smile
Don’t let the old man in.”
