Seventeen-Year-Old Slater Nalley Turns Grief Into Music on American Idol With Emotional Tribute Song That Leaves the Audience—and Carrie Underwood—in Tears

17-Year-Old Slater Nalley Brings Carrie Underwood to Tears with Emotional “American Idol” Audition

In one of the most moving moments of American Idol Season 23, 17-year-old Slater Nalley stunned the judges with a heartfelt original song that left Carrie Underwood visibly emotional and earned him a golden ticket to Hollywood.

Hailing from Atlanta, Nalley shared that his audition piece, “Traces of You,” was inspired by a poem written by his high school teacher, Mrs. Davis, in memory of her late son, Carter. The emotional weight of the story was palpable before a single note was played. But once Nalley began to sing, it became something unforgettable.

A Song from the Heart
Slater’s performance was stripped down—just a teen, his guitar, and a song woven from grief, love, and memory. Despite early nerves, he quickly found his rhythm, his gritty yet tender voice cutting through the room with raw authenticity. It wasn’t just a performance—it was a tribute, a moment of shared humanity that visibly moved not only Mrs. Davis but also Carrie Underwood, who wiped away tears as Nalley sang.

“Even though this was about your son, every single person that hears that can fill in that memory with somebody that’s in themselves,” Underwood said after the performance. “I couldn’t have imagined you doing that any better.”

Judges Praise His Songwriting Gift
Lionel Richie also praised Nalley’s lyrics, especially the standout line, “Your life was like a river running home,” calling it “very powerful.” Luke Bryan nodded in agreement, clearly impressed by the 17-year-old’s depth and storytelling. So sure of Nalley’s talent, Richie added, “We don’t need to vote,” as all three judges told him he was headed straight to Hollywood.

A Viral Moment
Uploaded to YouTube on February 28, 2025, Slater’s audition has already racked up 2.7 million views and counting. Fans flooded the comments section with praise:

“What an authentic, raw voice. With a heart like that, this young man will go far.”
“When you touch someone’s heart and bring a tear, you are a songwriter and singer. You have a gift.”

A Season of Powerful Country Voices
Slater Nalley joins a powerful crop of country contestants this season, including 25-year-old Sam Sparks, whose emotional performance of his original song “Colorado Gray” about recovering from a life-altering car accident also earned wide acclaim.

But there’s something undeniably magnetic about Nalley’s artistry—a quiet kind of power that doesn’t beg for attention but demands it through sincerity and soul. His ability to take personal grief and transform it into a universal message has already won hearts across the country.

With that golden ticket in hand and his name quickly gaining traction, Slater Nalley is proving that authenticity and heart still reign supreme in the world of country music—and he’s just getting started.
