    • More than half a century later, Neil Diamond himself was left speechless when he heard his songs playing in Song Sung Blue. He entered the screening room simply to observe, but gradually began tapping his foot to the rhythm of each song, applauding after each performance, and finally shedding tears. The most shocking moment came when he turned and asked, “When will it be shown again?” It wasn’t a loud, boisterous compliment, but the genuine reaction of a legend realizing that the music he wrote was still alive. Kaylee Muthart’s Journey from Tragedy to Hope: A Story of Addiction, Loss, and Recovery

Kaylee Muthart, now 26, was once a bright and promising student, destined for a future as a marine biologist. Growing up in Anderson, South Carolina, she excelled in school, earning straight-A grades, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Her dreams of studying marine biology seemed boundless, but as life’s challenges grew, she found herself on an unexpected and tragic path.

Struggling with Health Issues and Addiction
At 17, Kaylee was like many teenagers, balancing schoolwork and a part-time job to buy a car. However, she struggled with an irregular heartbeat, which often left her feeling anxious and fatigued. As her health faltered, her grades began to slip, and the pressure of life became overwhelming. Eventually, she made the decision to leave school and focus on other things.

By 18, Kaylee began drinking and smoking marijuana. Although she was aware of her family’s history of addiction, she avoided harder substances—until one day when she smoked laced marijuana at the age of 19. The experience led her to feel as though she was becoming closer to God, though she suspected the marijuana had been laced with something stronger like cocaine or methamphetamine.

The effects of the laced drug marked the beginning of a downward spiral. Kaylee’s life became consumed by addiction, and after a difficult breakup, her mental health worsened. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but the diagnosis came too late to reverse the damage.

Kaylee tried heroin and other substances, experiencing hallucinations and self-destructive behavior, including picking at her skin until it bled. Her addiction continued to grow, and she eventually turned to ecstasy, which she believed would bring her closer to God. Despite multiple attempts to quit, her addiction only deepened, and her family struggled to get her the help she needed.

    The Tragic Decision
In the midst of this turmoil, Kaylee’s mental state deteriorated, and after a difficult conversation with her mother, she made a devastating choice. Still under the influence of meth, she took a larger dose, and while hallucinating, she became convinced that the only way to “right the world” was to make a dramatic and horrifying sacrifice.

“I thought everything would end abruptly, and everyone would die if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately,” she recalled. Believing that she had to make this extreme act to correct the world, Kaylee gouged out both of her eyes, pushing her fingers into her sockets until they detached.

Screaming, “I want to see the light,” she was restrained by a pastor before further harm could be done. When paramedics arrived, they found her in a horrific state, with her eyes still attached but crushed. She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to remove what remained of her eyes.

    The Road to Recovery
Despite being left blind, Kaylee survived the ordeal and made the decision to turn her life around. After her hospital stay, she was transferred to a psychiatric facility, where she was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, giving her the clarity she needed to commit to staying off drugs.

In 2020, a significant milestone in her recovery came when she received new prosthetic eyes from Dr. Joseph Gorrin in Greenville. Kaylee was thrilled to regain a sense of normalcy, saying, “I just wanted to appear more normal to the outside world.”

Her boyfriend, Alex George, was deeply moved by the moment. “She was never any different to me, but I know she’s wanted this for a very long time,” he shared, expressing his joy and pride in her recovery.

Kaylee’s mother, too, was overwhelmed with emotion when she heard the news. “She cried with happiness,” Kaylee said, touched by her mother’s reaction.

    Looking Toward the Future
Although Kaylee’s dream of becoming a marine biologist now feels distant, she remains hopeful. “I feel optimistic about my future,” she says today, despite the many challenges she continues to face. “It took losing my sight to get me back on the right path, but I’m so glad I’m here.”

Her story, filled with pain and triumph, serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of addiction and the importance of seeking help. Kaylee Muthart’s journey, from the depths of addiction and tragedy to the strength she now embodies, proves that even in the darkest times, there is a chance for recovery and redemption.

Kaylee’s journey shows that no matter how far down one can fall, it’s always possible to find the strength to rise again. Share her story with your friends—it may offer them hope and inspiration.
