Donald Trump signed an executive order titled ‘Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government’ immediately after returning to office. The order maintains that there are only two genders, male and female, and that they are naturally fixed. As a result, passport applications containing a ‘X’ gender indication,
created under the Biden administration for non-binary individuals, have been suspended. It is possible that the legislation will also have an impact on non-binary and intersex Americans, however individuals who own ‘X’ passports will still be able to use them temporarily.
In addition, the directive stipulates that transgender women must be prohibited from female prisons, citing both safety and privacy issues as the reasons for this exclusion. The move has elicited a range of responses, with some individuals supporting the modification while others are opposed to it.
Caution is warranted since it may result in increased harm to transgender inmates. Significant controversy has been sparked as a result of the administration’s attitude to these problems, particularly among LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.
