I believed that my life was established, dependable, and even cheerful when I was 43 years old. On the other hand, my husband Mark sat me down with the words that shattered my life a week before our 25th wedding anniversary. He said, “I’ve been cheating on you.”***
It was the only man I had ever loved and been with in my entire life. While he was explaining that it had been going on for years, my head couldn’t stop spinning. He came out as cool and matter-of-fact, as if admitting guilt was sufficient to clear his name. Meanwhile, my heart was shattered into bits that I believed could never be put back together again. I drifted for a number of months, with a sense of being a hollow version of myself. I went through the motions of my employment, avoided going out with other people, and ate very little between meals. Next, Leo appeared. He worked as a bartender at a lounge that my closest friend insisted I visit because she felt that I needed to go out for the night. I saw him right away; he exuded self-assurance, charm, and appeared to be young beyond his years. Leo was fifteen years my junior when he was 28 years old, but there was something about his charming grin and the way he listened to me when I talked about my suffering that made me feel like I was being paid attention. I was brought back to life by Leo, who did not criticize me or feel sorry for me. I started putting on clothes, smiling, and laughing once more when I was around him. No matter how much of a difference in age there was, I finally felt like myself after what seemed like years. After then, the anniversary meal took place. For the time being, Mark and I had made the decision to keep our daughter, Sarah, in the dark about the divorce. The celebration that she had been planned for months was going to be a big one, and we didn’t want to ruin it. I found myself seated across from my ex-boyfriend at the dining table, both of us acting as if everything was normal. This was an awkward situation for me. The door was knocked on as we were waiting for Sarah to arrive, and we heard the knock. I opened it with a fake smile on my face, anticipating her arrival. Instead, I became tense. There stood Sarah, bright and beautiful, her eyes glistening with the joy of the moment. Leo was standing next to her, and he was holding her hand. It is Leo. The words “Mom, Dad!” Sarah smiled broadly. “I want you to encounter a person who is truly remarkable. Hello, my guy, Leo. This is him. There is a tilt in the world. My throat became constricted, my cheeks became red, and I was unable to formulate any words. Leo, on the other hand, appeared to be just as shocked, but he rapidly recovered and smiled at me with an imploring expression on his face. “Leo?” you ask. Despite my voice shaking, I was able to get the words out. Without any awareness, Sarah proceeded. “I wanted you to meet him on a beautiful evening like this one,” she said. Why is he so wonderful? With an uneasy chuckle, Mark, who was already nursing a glass of wine, continued to do so. “What a meager world, huh? This appears to be Leo’s way of catching everyone off guard. I was at a loss how to react; I could either laugh, cry, or collapse. When I was attempting to make sense of everything, my mind was racing. It appeared as like Leo was going to say something, but Sarah was too preoccupied with gushing about their love for him to hear him. Needing some fresh air, I finally excused myself and went to the kitchen. After a few moments, Leo came with them.
