More than two decades after the September 11, 2001 attacks, fresh footage of the Twin Towers’ collapse has emerged. Kei Sugimoto, who shot the video, recently shared it after unearthing old cassettes in his closet. “It’s crazy that we’re almost 23 years out and still getting new footage,” wrote a Reddit member.
Sugimoto’s footage, taken from the roof of a building at 64 St Marks Place in New York City, provides a unique perspective on the towers collapse from the north. The video shows the towers billowing with smoke before collapsing, offering a “unique perspective not seen from the south or east,” according to one user.
Since its broadcast on July 23, 2023, the footage has sparked extensive online controversy. A user thought: “Makes me wonder how much history is being stored in people’s attics or basements waiting to be unearthed.”
Sugimoto’s decision to distribute this footage adds a fresh visual element to 9/11 while also strengthening the collective memory of an event that influenced the twenty-first century.
