Hollywood seems like a city where stardom runs in the family, but this exceptional woman lived a humble childhood.
This remarkable woman was born in sunny Santa Monica in 1961, but her childhood was anything but blissful. Her parents were madly in love in high school. Two years later, her mother sent her and her sisters to live with their paternal grandmother. The TV star’s grandma was a hardworking, coupon-clipping cafeteria worker who created a pleasant, joyous home filled with the smell of fresh baking.
But suddenly, everything changed.
Drug addiction
After four years, the mother returned with a new husband and the family moved to Washington, where turmoil ensued.
At 11, the future TV star took care of her four younger siblings. The mother, Vicky, was physically violent and a prescription drug user who spent most days in bed.
While living on assistance and food stamps, the TV personality cooked, cleaned, and taught the family. A few bucks could spell the difference between eating or going hungry in the remaining days of the month for those with low funds.
She wrote in her memoir, “On the way home [from the store], I had to ride very carefully so that the full plastic bags hanging from my handlebars wouldn’t swing and break the eggs.”
Later interviews revealed how awkward it was to pull out the food stamp book at the supermarket.
“I remember standing in line at the grocery store with the food stamps and it was mortifying for me, because the girl – she was like the popular girl in school – [and] her parents were the rich family [and] they owned the dairy,” the actor told Daily Mail in 2024.
Raking leaves, collecting berries
Despite her hardships, the girl tried to make the best of her position. She may have developed her creativity, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit during these difficult times, which would later help her launch her own TV show, become a producer, and write many books.
She generated money by raking leaves, collecting berries, and selling handcrafted potholders for $1 each as a teenager.
The hardest part was when she couldn’t protect her siblings from their mother’s abuse. She called 911 one evening after her mother ingested a bottle of pills, things worsened. According to her story, her mother beat her so hard that her “eyes were swollen” and “body was covered in welts.”
The stepfather who had moved back in also crossed unacceptable limits, causing physical and emotional wounds.
Despite everything, this future TV superstar would become famous.

After the divorce in 2005, Sandra began dating Andrew Cuomo, the future New York governor.
Sandra was immediately drawn to Cuomo, fit and affable, and his three daughters at a garden party. She initially sought to match Cuomo with her friends after his tough divorce with Kerry Kennedy.
However, they quickly realized they wanted to be together. Their relationship was kept secret from friends and family for nearly a year.
After the secret got too much, they publicly announced their relationship and moved into Sandra’s Chappaqua house.Sandra said Cuomo was less glamorous than her first marriage.

Sandra Lee got breast cancer in 2015. She survived cancer thanks to early detection, but it was difficult.
Governor Cuomo took time off to support her during her lumpectomy and double mastectomy.
After surgery, she developed a breast infection that required three months of intravenous medication. Sandra announced her cancer-free status in 2015. She had a successful hysterectomy in March 2022.
Sandra’s breast cancer experience was difficult, but she turned it into something positive, as she always does.
In her governorship, Cuomo promoted cancer awareness by promoting the $91 million “No Excuses” statute, which extended breast cancer screening and abolished insurance co-pays for mammograms.
