German immigrants Harry Irving Winkler and Ilse Anna Marie (Hadra) Winkler welcomed Henry into the world on October 30, 1945, in New York City.
Henry was born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He attended the McBurney School and then Emerson College, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in arts in 1967. At the Yale School of Drama, he pursued his education further and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 1970.
Career Start-Up
Winkler’s career started out with guest appearances on shows like “The Bob Newhart Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” as well as a number of television advertisements.
When he was chosen to play Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the television series “Happy Days,” it was his big break in 1974. With the character’s rapid rise to fame, Winkler became well-known. He received two Golden Globe Awards and three Emmy nominations for his portrayal as Fonzie.
