This month, legendary comedian Carol Burnett turns 91. She has been reflecting on her incredible life and achievements as she approaches this milestone. Burnett revealed a heartbreaking loss that still haunts her 20 years later in a recent interview.

Former producer Joe Hamilton and Carol Burnett had three daughters. In 1963, they had Carrie Hamilton, their oldest daughter. Carrie pursued a performing career like her famous mother. She was a big character on “Fame” and in other shows.

However, Carrie faced challenges. Drug addiction as a child hurt her and her family. Burnett told AARP in 2020, “When we got her into a third rehab, oh, she hated my guts! Let them detest you because you love them.”

Burnett also admitted to feeling sad and self-conscious about her daughter’s challenges. She told ABC News in 2002 that she wished she had done things differently. She wondered if she was missing something or wasn’t strong enough.

Burnett also said Carrie was sober at 18 and they became good friends. They were inseparable for 20 years. Their relationship was unshakable, and Carrie’s career flourished.

In 2001, Carrie was diagnosed with lung cancer, which spread to her brain. Carrie used her strong sense of humor during her treatments despite her misery. Carrie’s daily decision to embrace life moved Burnett.

Burnett was devastated when 38-year-old Carrie died in 2002. She persevered to finish a play they started together and owed Hal Prince to finish in honor of Carrie.

Although Carrie died 21 years ago, Burnett still loves her. Carrie’s courage, love, and spirit inspire her daily. Burnett said in a recent interview that Carrie is always with her. Together, they laughed, worked, and cried. Carrie was powerful.

Burnett thrives after this tragedy. She turned 91 and got many lifetime achievement awards for her humor and entertainment work. Burnett laughs that she feels 11 but is shocked at how rapidly time has flown away. She is grateful for her health and cheerful outlook.

No parent should have to experience the agony of losing a child. Burnett’s tale shows that tragedy may nonetheless inspire courage and resilience. Let’s treasure our loved ones and enjoy every day as we commemorate Carol Burnett’s remarkable life and career.
