During the swimming portion of a CrossFit competition, an athlete tragically drowned. There have been videos and terrifying facts released that provide insight into how this catastrophe occurred.

There have been widespread shockwaves following the death of a Serbian athlete. The deceased athlete was a competitor in the Crossfit Games on August 8 in Fort Worth, Texas, and drowned only inches from the competition finish line.

A news source claims that the incident occurred on the first day of the tournament and resulted in the postponement of the events for the rest of the day. The swimmer’s identify as Lazar Dukic was established by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Dukic drowned in Marine Creek Lake on Thursday morning, August 8. According to the authorities, the Fort Worth Fire Department responded to a distress call at 8 a.m. local time on behalf of a contestant who had vanished from sight (M.I.A.) in the water.

Subsequently, first responders attempted to find Dukic with the aid of diving teams and drone technology. They were able to remove his body from the water after about an hour. Dukic’s remains were then taken to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

The CEO of CrossFit, Don Faul, verified that there were safety personnel present throughout the swimming event and stated that the company is completely assisting the authorities with their inquiry. He also mentioned how “gutted” the situation has left him.

In response to the circumstances, Faul said, “We’ll remain focused on our community and the family throughout this terrible time. Many members of the community who knew the athlete well and who liked and admired them are currently in pain. Many individuals are in mourning.”

A WFAA reporter spoke with a witness who was present on the day Dukic died, asking him questions about his perceptions and emotions.

The man revealed, still in shock, “My heart was pounding when it first happened and probably for a few hours after.” Completely devastated, um. Almost denial, not sure what to think.”

The man claimed to have spent several hours talking to friends and family in an attempt to make sense of what had happened. It’s really difficult. It will probably take some time. As of right now, I’ll have times when I’m fine and times when I’ll just cry because I’m so shocked by what really happened there,” the witness who wished to remain anonymous revealed.

While the witness didn’t know Dukic well, he said he briefly chatted with him when they stayed at the same hotel for a tournament.

“I only remember his kindness. Despite not knowing me, he talked to me “said the man.

He said it was heartbreaking to witness Dukic’s brother, who was also competing, rush up and down the sidelines looking for him in the water.

In addition, the witness and others tried to save Dukic when he was drowning. We called to the lifeguards to help Dukic, who was 150 meters out in the ocean.

The witness added someone else dived in to save Dukic, but one lifeguard advised them to get out of the water.

He said the lifeguard swam over to where Dukic had gone under, but she paddled around and got out. “I feel like, at that point, she needed to blow a whistle and stop the event,” explained the witness.

Several platforms live-streamed the swimming event. On Thursday morning, ABC affiliate WFAA reported live streaming ended.

X users have posted two videos of the tragedy, but CrossFit Games no longer streams events. Adam Mahler recounted his three years as a lifeguard.

In his film, participants swam in the lake to reach the finish line outside the water. Some athletes, like Dukic, struggle to keep swimming.

He strained to keep his head above water, bobbing it. Submerged, the athlete never emerges.

“You have no idea how incensed I am watching this video where there is a clear active drowning victim,” Mahler wrote beside the video. Responsible parties should face litigation and jail term. #CrossFit.”

Someone on X shared a similar video. This person’s video zoomed in on Dukic’s drowning, showing him fighting for his life beside two lifeguards on paddleboards.

“While everyone watches Tia finish his race. That includes @CrossFitGames’ safety team. In the video’s caption, X user wrote, “Lazar Dukic drowns with spectators turned away from rescue.”

After the tragedy, CrossFit Games made a devotion to Dukic on their X account. The saddest day in @CrossFit history. Lazar Đukić’s loss has devastated us and the CrossFit community.

They named Dukic one of the sport’s “most talented competitors.” Dukic was a loving brother, son, and friend as well as a talented athlete.

He was “fiercely competitive, incurably joyful, and uncommonly kind,” according to CrossFit, and “the sun of any room he was in.”

The company also said the loss is unimaginable. They pledged to continue the Games in Dukic’s honor and dedicate the weekend’s festivities to him.

RIP, Dukic. We offer the renowned athlete’s family our deepest condolences and best wishes for healing.
