Many people have been shocked to hear about Shannen Doherty’s death. Although the actress had been forthright about her cancer diagnosis, nobody anticipated her untimely demise.

In a statement released with People on Saturday, Leslie Sloane—Doherty’s longtime publicist—confirmed the news.

I regret to inform you of the passing of Shannen Doherty, the actress. After a long fight with cancer, she passed away on Saturday, July 13.

It was disclosed by Doherty last year that her disease had progressed to her brain. In a heartfelt Instagram video posted on June 7, the actress made the announcement. Doherty was shown undergoing radiation treatment in the footage, which was recorded on January 12, 2023.

It was shown in her brain ct scan on January 5th, she wrote. “On January 12th, the initial radiation treatment was administered.”

My fear is out in the open. My life was chaotic, and I suffer from severe claustrophobia. Having access to outstanding medical professionals like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the fantastic staff at Cedar Sinai has been a blessing. But this is what cancer may look like: anxiety, stress, and the timing of it all.

At the tender age of eleven, Doherty made her television debut. Voyagers! and Michael Landon’s Father Murphy, on which she made her television debut, were her first guest spots. She reunited with Landon for their work on Little House on the Prairie, where she played Jenny Wilder.

Heathers, released in 1988, was her first feature film role after making the switch to film in the late 1980s. Brenda Walsh, a role she reprised in 1990 on Beverly Hills 90210, marked her return to television.

Before landing a role on the smash TV series Charmed, she rose to stardom appearing in a string of made-for-TV movies.

Despite the conclusion of Charmed, she kept acting. Reality programs, though, constituted the vast majority of her television appearances.

She launched her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear,” towards the end of 2023. On the podcast, she chats with a wide variety of guests, including her former co-stars and other professionals in the field. She also featured her podcast in her most recent Instagram video.

She gives her fans an update on her cancer in the video. Cancer treatment is something she lets children know about. “I am completely unaware of the duration of my chemotherapy treatment,” she declares.

I am completely unaware of the exact duration; I can’t say if it will be three or six months. Alternatively, if we decide to make another change after three months and it still doesn’t work. ‘I am unable to foretell that. My doctors are unable to foretell it. That’s terrifying. It’s a major eye-opener,” the actress continues.

What she says after this, though, might trouble her admirers. On the other hand, there is some good news: my cancer cells’ molecular structure changed not long ago, which implies there are a lot more treatments I can try. Optimism has returned to me after a few of months’ absence. I was hopeful and was getting ready before, but now there are so many more protocols, she explains.

People are heartbroken by her optimism in the final video she uploaded just two weeks before she passed away. “I truly believed she was doing fine,” one viewer of the video said. Hope was a theme in her most recent podcast, which I watched.Suddenly, the cancer became overwhelming.

That she held out hope and was battling only a short time ago breaks my heart, another commenter said. “She is truly remarkable. ❤️”

“It crushed me to watch her be so optimistic in this video,” another viewer commented. Her addition to the House of Halliwell podcast made my day. I really cannot fathom the hardships that her family is enduring.

People were shocked and saddened to hear Shannen express hope for the first time in a long time, only to have her life abruptly ended.
