That’s where the shift lock release can help.

On many vehicles, removing the small cover and following the manufacturer’s procedure allows you to manually release the gear selector and move it into Neutral, even when the normal shift-lock system isn’t working.

This can be particularly useful when a disabled vehicle needs to be moved or loaded onto a tow truck.

Important: Not every vehicle has this feature in the same location, and some newer models use different emergency-release mechanisms. Always consult your owner’s manual, secure the vehicle against rolling, and remember that releasing the shift lock does not necessarily disengage an electronic parking brake.

It’s one of those small features you might never need—but knowing it exists could make a difficult roadside situation much easier!
