They’re vintage adjustable roller skates!

Unlike today’s skates, which often come as complete boots, these early designs featured metal platforms, small wheels, and leather straps that fastened over ordinary shoes.

Many models could be adjusted to fit different shoe sizes, making them practical for growing children.

Some even required a special metal skate key to tighten or adjust them.

They weren’t always comfortable, and skating on rough sidewalks could be quite a challenge. But that didn’t stop children from spending hours practicing, racing friends, and enjoying the freedom of rolling down the street.

For many people who grew up between the 1950s and 1970s, these metal skates bring back memories of scraped knees, neighborhood friendships, and afternoons spent playing outdoors.

Do you remember wearing these old-fashioned roller skates? Did you have a pair with a skate key? Share your memories!
