She clearly did not appreciate the interaction.
“Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale.”
Then Clarkson made a comparison that immediately caught people’s attention.
“But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman. For sure, check it out 👎.”
The reference was unmistakable.
In *Pretty Woman*, Julia Roberts’ character Vivian Ward is famously dismissed by boutique employees who judge her based on her appearance, only for her to return later with expensive shopping bags and point out the enormous sale they had lost.
Some of Clarkson’s followers immediately sided with her.
One person wrote:
“I’ve been treated this way. Thank you for posting publicly about it.”
Another commenter said they had previously met Clarkson and described her as exceptionally kind.
“Met Kelly before. One of the nicest and most humble people on the planet and treated all of us on the staff with respect and kindness. If she’s mad at you, you likely deserved it.”
Others were less convinced.
Some questioned whether Clarkson had been upset because she was not recognized, while others suggested she was using her celebrity platform too aggressively against a small business.
Then Art of Play responded.
The store said Clarkson had asked about an elaborate mechanical bird named Molly.
According to the shop, Molly was not actually available for purchase.
“Yesterday, Kelly Clarkson visited us in Brooklyn and inquired about buying ‘Molly,’ a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton who plays an important role in the magic shows we host here. Molly is permanently attached to the wall and isn’t for sale.”
That explanation immediately changed the tone of the online discussion.
If the item was not for sale, some commenters argued, perhaps the encounter had simply been misunderstood.
Still, Art of Play acknowledged Clarkson’s complaint.
“However, the negative experience Kelly described on Twitter would resonate with anyone who has ever felt judged in a shop.”
The business also said all visitors were welcome, whether they intended to buy something or simply browse.
“At Art of Play whether someone comes in to make a purchase or simply look around for a while, they are equally welcome.”
But the store also described the intense backlash it had received following Clarkson’s post.
“Imagine our surprise when our small local business was suddenly attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store.”
The shop said it hoped the disagreement could eventually be resolved.
Then it ended its statement with a reference to one of Clarkson’s most famous songs.
“As a talented popular singer once said ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’.”
That line might have been intended as humor.
Clarkson, however, was not laughing.
Later on October 11, she returned to X and directly challenged the store’s explanation.
“Cool, cool. Sure, it wasn’t for sale. That’s the narrative Art of Play is gonna go with 👍.”
She then provided a much more detailed version of the encounter.
According to Clarkson, she had pointed toward a price tag beside the singing bird when asking whether the item was for sale.
She alleged that an employee looked her up and down before responding in what she described as a condescending tone.
“Yes, it’s for sale but it costs 15,000 dollars so if you’d like me to find something comparable for you I can.”
Clarkson said that exchange directly contradicted the store’s claim that the bird had never been for sale.
She then accused the business of being dishonest.
“That all never happened and now it’s not for sale. Okay, cool. So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar.”
Clarkson also responded to critics who accused her of attacking a small business.
“I obviously support small businesses because I was literally at a small business trying to purchase things.”
She continued:
“I love small businesses and know they are important and I always support them, but you don’t get a free pass to treat people less than in your store just because you are a small business.”
Then she ended with another blunt message.
“It’s not that hard to be kind. I never blast people but you my friend were an exception. Your store is really cool. Unfortunately, you aren’t.”
By that point, the dispute had become much bigger than one uncomfortable shopping interaction.
The central question was now simple: where had the alleged $15,000 price come from if Molly was not for sale?
Art of Play responded again in the early hours of October 12.
This time, the business offered a more detailed explanation.
According to the shop, Molly herself was permanently attached to the wall and served as something of a mascot.
But her creator, Seattle-based artist Bliss Kolb, apparently owned a nearly identical version.
“We explained that while Molly is permanently attached to the wall and serves as a de facto mascot for our shop, a nearly identical automaton is owned by the creator of the machines, a brilliant artist named Bliss Kolb who lives in Seattle.”
The store then explained the $15,000 figure.
“He told us he would be willing to part with Molly’s twin for $15,000. We explained all of this to Kelly Clarkson.”
That clarification answered one question—but created another.
Some commenters wondered why the information about Molly’s “twin” had not appeared in the store’s first statement, particularly since Molly had initially been described as “one-of-a-kind.”
One commenter wrote:
“10 hours ago: Molly is one of a kind and was not for sale…… Now that Kelly has shown proof of a price tag next to her: well she isn’t one of a kind, there’s a TWIN for sale.”
Art of Play also said it had offered Clarkson another singing bird automaton made by a traditional German clockmaking company.
That version reportedly cost around $2,000.
“She did not stick around long enough to see it.”
Still, some people argued that the store continued focusing too heavily on the merchandise and not enough on Clarkson’s central complaint—that she believed she had been judged and spoken to disrespectfully.
One commenter wrote:
“I think we forgot that this didn’t have much to do with the bird rather the fact that somebody at your store treated her really poorly and made her feel less than.”
Another person claimed to have experienced similar treatment during previous visits to Art of Play.
The store ultimately said it had contacted Clarkson privately in an attempt to resolve the situation.
“We’ve reached out to Kelly directly to try and clear the air. We really do wish her the best and hope that someday we can all laugh about this misunderstanding.”
Whether that private conversation will actually happen remains unclear.
Meanwhile, the object at the center of the disagreement has become a story of its own.
Molly is an elaborate mechanical bird that sings, moves, and dances when operated by a hand crank.
The automaton uses an intricate system of wooden gears, cams, levers, cables, leather bellows, and a brass whistle to create lifelike movement and birdsong.
The shop has previously described Molly as delicate enough to carry a “Do Not Touch” sign.
She also has a role in performances held at the store, helping explain why Art of Play says the original bird is permanently attached to the wall.
So what began as Kelly Clarkson walking into a Brooklyn store hoping to buy something unusual has turned into a days-long argument involving a $15,000 mechanical bird, conflicting accounts, accusations of rudeness and dishonesty, and thousands of people choosing sides online.
Clarkson insists the issue was never simply about whether she could buy the bird.
For her, it was about how she felt she was treated.
Art of Play, meanwhile, maintains that the interaction involved a misunderstanding over which automaton was actually available for purchase.
For now, both versions remain on the record.
And until Clarkson and the shop speak privately—or additional details emerge—the little mechanical bird at the center of the disagreement may continue creating far more noise than anyone expected.
