A Debt Seventeen Years in the Making

She laughed first. Then she cried so hard she had to sit down. My stepfather, Mike, just smiled, like he already understood exactly how much this meant to both of us.

I had invited her because she spent seventeen years putting my future ahead of her own. This was the one night I could hand some of that back to her.

Cruelty at the Courtyard Doors

Outside the courtyard, before we even reached the prom doors, my stepsister Brianna mocked my mother for the modest blue dress she wore. Before I could respond, Mike stepped in.

He told Brianna to apologize and leave, reminding her how much she owed the woman she was insulting. Brianna offered a subdued apology and walked away.

My mother stood beside me, still trembling from what had just happened. I squeezed her hand and told her she was the reason we were all there that night, not someone to feel ashamed of.

Dancing the Night She Never Had

Then we walked into the ballroom together. As we danced, I watched her begin to relax, finally able to enjoy the evening she had nearly lost all over again to someone else’s cruelty.

She had missed her own prom years before, trading it for responsibilities no teenager should have had to carry alone. Now she finally had her chance to dance. I was grateful to be the one holding her hand.
