…he jumped behind the counter to help bag orders and keep the grill running. That small decision — choosing to serve others instead of celebrating himself — would soon catch the eye of a stranger, spark a viral moment, and set in motion a wave of generosity that would reshape his future.
A Graduation Shift Like No Other
On May 21, Mykale Baker graduated from Mills Creek High School in Georgia.
A Video That Touched Millions
Among the customers that night was Maria Mendoza, another mother who had just come from her own daughter’s graduation at a different school. She noticed Baker’s attitude as he worked.
“He was so kind, so polite,” Mendoza told 11 Alive. “Radiating joy, even after such a big day. His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that.”
Mendoza filmed Baker at the grill, still wearing his medals, and posted the clip to TikTok, encouraging viewers to take notice of his effort. The video went on to surpass 4.5 million views, drawing widespread attention to the teen’s quiet dedication.
From Viral Moment to a Fundraising Campaign
As the video spread, Mendoza decided to do more than share a clip. She launched a GoFundMe campaign with an initial goal of $60,000 to help Baker pursue his education after high school.
On the fundraising page, Mendoza wrote that Baker “didn’t do it for attention” and “doesn’t even know his story went viral,” explaining that the money raised would go toward college tuition, books, supplies, and other educational costs.
The response far exceeded expectations. The campaign eventually raised more than $230,000, nearly four times its original goal.
On May 26, Mendoza returned to the Burger King to surprise Baker in person with the funds raised up to that point — $6,000 at the time — bringing him to tears in front of his coworkers.
A Family’s Pride and a Teen’s Gratitude
Baker’s sister, Mycah Baker, who said her brother is the youngest of eight children, spoke about his character following the surprise. “I don’t think he’s ever noticed how selfless he is until now,” she told the New York Post. “He’s always done these things without a lot of people seeing it. It’s something that comes naturally to him.”
She added that the family was grateful he was finally receiving recognition. “Our family is extremely grateful that somebody like Myke is getting the attention that he’s ultimately always deserved,” Mycah said.
When Mendoza asked about his plans for college, Baker admitted he had been unsure he could afford to continue his education and had considered taking a gap year. Overcome with emotion, he thanked Mendoza and her followers directly.
“Thank you so much, I was thinking of taking a gap year because I didn’t have money for school, but thank you to all of you,” he said. “Now, I might actually go straight to technical college and get my mechanical.”
He added, still fighting back tears, “I never thought this would happen to me, I’m very thankful.”
With the support flowing in, Baker now plans to attend a technical college and pursue a mechanical program, a path that once felt financially out of reach.
The outpouring of generosity didn’t stop with the GoFundMe. Burger King’s own foundation stepped in as well, contributing an additional $10,000 scholarship on top of the money already raised through the campaign.
Through it all, Baker never sought the spotlight. He simply showed up to work on the biggest day of his young life — and in doing so, moved thousands of strangers enough to help secure his future.
