Leadership Resignation and Suspended Executions
Governor Bill Lee announced on October 3 that Correction Commissioner Frank Strada would resign. Lee said Strada viewed the decision as being in Tennessee’s best interests.
Lee also suspended executions in the state through the end of the year, pending an independent investigation into what went wrong during Pike’s attempted execution. The September 30 incident was not an isolated one.
It follows a similar failure in May, when staff were unable to establish IV access during the attempted execution of Tony Carruthers, forcing officials to abandon the procedure. The two cases together have raised broader questions about the state’s execution protocols.
