He passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family, closing out a six-decade career spent giving voice to some of animation and television’s most enduring characters.
A Voice That Defined Generations
Cullen first spoke as Optimus Prime in the original 1984 Transformers animated series, instantly becoming the sound of heroism for a generation of young viewers. That voice never faded from memory.
He returned to the role decades later for the live-action Transformers films, reprising Optimus Prime in the 2007 feature and again in 2023’s Rise of the Beasts, carrying the character across new generations of moviegoers.
A Career Beyond Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime was far from Cullen’s only mark on popular culture. He also voiced Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, lending warmth and gentle melancholy to one of children’s literature’s most beloved characters.
His range extended further still, including voicing KARR in Knight Rider, among many other memorable roles that filled out a body of work spanning six decades in film and television.
Remembering His Legacy
Cullen’s family asked that his legacy be remembered not only through his characters, but through compassion, integrity and loyalty.
