The Google Maps ‘Black Hole’ That Turned Out to Be a Thriving Island

But when explorers finally reached this so-called hole, the truth turned out to be something else entirely.

The Mysterious Dark Spot on Google Maps

From orbit, the shape looks almost unnatural: a solid black core surrounded by a halo of surf where waves break against unseen shores. That stark contrast between darkness and bright, churning water is exactly what fueled online speculation about the image being altered or hidden.

What Vostok Island Really Is

The void has a name and a location: Vostok Island, a remote speck of land belonging to Kiribati, so isolated it might as well sit on another planet. There is no cover-up and no digital error behind its appearance.

The blackness comes from the island itself. Vostok is covered in vegetation so dense that it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, turning satellite imagery into what looks like solid ink. The surf visible around its edges is simply the ocean meeting its shoreline.

Diving Into the Waters Around the ‘Void’

Curiosity about Vostok didn’t stop at the surface. National Geographic divers explored the waters surrounding the island, and found abundance rather than emptiness.

Sharks moved through the surrounding waters alongside barracuda, while schools of jacks and surgeonfish swept past in dense, living formations. One diver described the experience as the best dive of his life, calling it among the most pristine places he had ever seen.

The internet had braced for horror: a portal, a hidden facility, a digital wound in the ocean. What actually existed beneath and around that dark patch was the opposite—a wild, largely untouched ecosystem so rich with life that it becomes nearly invisible from space.
