That name was Richard, a fifty-year-old man Tyler had met at his first full-time job after graduation. Within weeks, Tyler couldn’t stop talking about him. I told myself it was normal for a young man to admire someone at work.

A New Friendship at Work
Tyler started at the local hardware store full of energy, and it wasn’t long before he mentioned Richard constantly. “He’s different, Mom,” Tyler told me one evening. “He actually listens to me. Like what I say really matters to him.”
I was relieved, honestly. I thought maybe Tyler had found the kind of steady, older presence he’d missed since his father left. For a little while, I let myself believe that was all this was.
Growing Closer, Growing Distant
But Richard didn’t stay in the background. He began inviting Tyler over almost every single weekend, and soon my son’s calendar seemed to revolve entirely around him. Whenever I asked Tyler about dinner, he already had plans with Richard.
I told myself I was only feeling the normal ache of a mother watching her son grow independent. Still, the intensity of it gnawed at me. An older man taking such focused interest in my son felt like something I couldn’t just explain away.
I kept turning the age gap over in my mind, unable to convince myself it meant nothing at all.
The Dinner Invitation
One Sunday, Tyler asked if he could bring Richard over so I could finally meet him properly. I said yes, partly because I loved my son, and partly because I needed to see this man with my own eyes.

Richard arrived around six carrying a bottle of wine. He was polite through most of dinner, even charming, but there was something in the way he watched Tyler that put me on edge.
When Tyler stepped down the hall to grab something to show Richard, I carried the dishes into the kitchen. Richard followed me.
He didn’t say anything at first. He glanced toward the hallway, lowered his voice, and the warmth I’d seen all evening disappeared from his face entirely.
“It’s time you learned what I really want from your son,” he said.
“You didn’t really think I was doing all this for no reason, did you?” Richard asked, looking straight into my eyes.
