But it wasn’t long before the person sitting beside her became almost as much of a talking point as the game itself.
Tom Cruise.
Swift arrived at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14 wearing a red-and-white checkered top as she joined members of the Kelce family inside a private suite.
The appearance marked her first Chiefs game since she and Kelce married in New York City on July 3.
The couple had largely kept a lower profile following their wedding, although they were spotted together during a New York City dinner outing on September 6.
So naturally, cameras were already watching Swift closely when she returned to Arrowhead.
Then Cruise appeared beside her.
Photographs showed the Mission: Impossible star sitting next to Swift in the VIP suite, while television cameras captured the pair having what appeared to be a lively conversation during the first quarter.
Almost immediately, social media began trying to figure out what they could possibly be discussing.
Some people focused simply on seeing two of the world’s most recognizable celebrities unexpectedly sharing a football suite.
Others joked about Cruise’s appearance.
“Tom Cruise is starting to look like Jerry O’Connell,” one person commented.
Another wrote, “Find you a wife that looks at you like T Swift looks at T Cruise.”
“They go to the same barber,” another joked.
As often happens when Swift appears at an NFL game, other commenters scrutinized her appearance and behavior.
Some questioned her makeup, while others commented on the drink she was holding. Another person speculated about whether she had undergone cosmetic work.
None of that, however, generated quite as much curiosity as the conversation happening between Swift and Cruise.
Because cameras could see them talking.
They just couldn’t hear them.
That left an enormous gap for the internet to fill.
Professional lip reader Nicola Hickling later offered her interpretation of portions of the exchange, as reported by NDTV Sports.
According to Hickling’s reading, Swift appeared at one point to say something about “the structure of the entire infrastructure of the audience,” although without audio or context, it was impossible to determine what she might have meant.
Other portions were even more mysterious.
Hickling interpreted Cruise as telling Swift, “You may not know it, but you do have a job.”
Swift then appeared to put down her drink, nod and respond, “Right.”
At another point, Hickling believed Cruise said, “I told her to stick to one and that it’s the last time.”
Who “her” was supposed to be — or what “one” referred to — remained completely unclear.
Lip-reading from distant video is inherently uncertain, and neither Swift nor Cruise initially confirmed those interpretations.
That uncertainty naturally produced some much less serious theories online.
One Facebook user joked that Cruise was explaining “the laws and customs on his home planet Zoltar.”
Others made Scientology jokes, while another person imagined Cruise offering Swift a role in one of his movies.
Someone else noticed that Cruise appeared to leave his seat later in the game and wondered why another person eventually appeared beside Swift.
The theories continued.
But just days later, Cruise offered a much simpler explanation.
During a September 17 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote his new film Digger, Cruise was shown a photograph of himself sitting beside Swift at the Chiefs game.
Fallon wanted to know what everyone else had been wondering.
What were they talking about?
According to Cruise, football.
“She was schooling me on football,” he told Fallon.
“For real. Like, she was bringing the football.”
Cruise praised Swift as a “genius” and joked about how dramatically her knowledge of the sport had apparently changed since her relationship with Kelce began.
He noted that Swift “knew nothing about football when she met Travis,” but said she now knows her stuff.
Their conversation apparently wasn’t limited to the NFL.
Cruise said they also talked about music and movies.
And while their Arrowhead conversation surprised some viewers, Cruise was hardly a stranger suddenly appearing in Swift and Kelce’s circle.
Their public connection stretches back at least to Swift’s Eras Tour.
Cruise attended her concert at London’s Wembley Stadium on June 22, 2024.
He was spotted in the VIP section, where he joined concertgoers in one of the tour’s most famous traditions: exchanging handmade friendship bracelets.
Cruise wasn’t the only celebrity in the VIP area that night.
Travis and Jason Kelce were also there, along with Greta Gerwig, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Liam Hemsworth.
Video from the concert showed Cruise smiling and dancing along to “Shake It Off.”
At one point, Kelce stood behind Cruise with his hands on the actor’s shoulders before leaning forward and apparently saying something to him.
Cruise laughed and patted Kelce’s hand.
Jason Kelce could also be seen enthusiastically moving to the music nearby.
What initially looked like an unexpected celebrity crossover at Arrowhead, therefore, had actually been developing for years.
And Cruise’s connection with the couple reportedly became considerably more personal.
When Swift and Kelce married in New York City on July 3, Cruise was among the guests.
Sports broadcaster Joe Buck later recalled meeting the Hollywood star during the celebration.
Appearing on the Rates & Barrels podcast, Buck said people — including his daughters — were eager to hear details about what happened inside the wedding.
But one particular celebrity encounter stood out for him.
“Being 57 years old, to get to talk to Tom Cruise for 20 minutes was better than any part of the entire night to me, other than watching them get married,” Buck said.
That history puts the Arrowhead footage into a very different context.
Cruise had already attended Swift’s tour.
He had interacted publicly with Kelce.
He had reportedly attended their wedding.
And now he was sitting beside Swift during Kelce’s first regular-season game since the couple married.
Yet Cruise was only half of what made September 14 an unusual night for Swift.
More than 1,500 miles away, the 78th Emmy Awards were taking place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Swift had a reason to be there.
Her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — The Final Show, had received five Emmy nominations.
Among them was Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), with Swift recognized as a performer and supervising producer.
The production also received nominations related to directing, picture editing, sound mixing, and technical direction and camerawork.
Its major variety-special category had already been decided during the Creative Arts Emmys, where The Muppet Show took the award.
That production included Swift’s friend Sabrina Carpenter as both a performer and executive producer.
Swift nevertheless had been personally involved in campaigning for The Final Show.
In late August, she joined director Glenn Weiss and sound designer John Ross for an intimate Los Angeles event attended by roughly 50 Emmy voters.
The gathering was unusually private.
Phones, cameras and members of the press were reportedly prohibited.
Swift even performed during the event, although what she sang was not disclosed.
She also discussed the challenge of filming the final Eras Tour concert without damaging the sense of freedom that had become such an important part of the live experience.
“One of the things that I was so impressed by, and the needle Glenn threaded so effortlessly, is that the Eras Tour was such a phenomenon because of so many factors but one that I know that is really important is that it was a source of great escapism for the people who were there,” Swift said.
For Swift, capturing the concert wasn’t simply about positioning cameras around the stage.
The audience itself was part of the experience.
“If you lose the feeling of relaxation and freedom for the fans there, then you’ve lost a huge element of what makes this concert experience so special,” she explained.
She also praised the physical preparation required from the camera crew.
“If you liked the choreography that you saw of our dancers, you should have seen the footwork of our Steadicam operator,” Swift joked.
The nearly three-and-a-half-hour production includes 45 songs and documents the final Eras Tour concert in Vancouver, British Columbia.
It premiered on Disney+ on December 12, 2025.
And although Swift did not travel to Los Angeles for the Emmy ceremony, viewers still saw her during the broadcast.
That was thanks to Mariska Hargitay.
Hargitay appeared as her famous Law & Order: Special Victims Unit character, Captain Olivia Benson, in a pre-recorded comedy sketch built around a very appropriate mystery:
Would Taylor Swift attend the Emmys?
The segment showed Benson and her team studying an elaborate red-string evidence board while attempting to connect supposed Swift clues with Emmy-nominated television shows.
It was an obvious joke about Swifties’ famous habit of searching practically everything the singer does for hidden messages and Easter eggs.
Then, roughly halfway through the sketch, another investigator entered.
Swift herself.
Wearing a matching blazer and trousers, she appeared as an unnamed rookie police officer who seemed considerably less convinced by the investigation.
“Hey guys, this isn’t adding up,” Swift said.
“Our perp has a clear M.O. A lot of this doesn’t fit the pattern, and I don’t think everything is a clue.”
Hargitay immediately responded:
“It is to the Swifties.”
Swift then proceeded to behave exactly like someone planting clues.
“I think what we’re going to be looking for is hiding in plain sight,” she said.
Then came four cryptic phrases:
“Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or south.”
“What did you just say?” Hargitay asked.
“I didn’t say anything,” Swift replied.
Predictably, Swift’s fans immediately began trying to decipher what those words could mean.
Eventually, Hargitay’s character reached the conclusion viewers already knew.
“Taylor Swift will not be at the Emmys.”
Swift then delivered the punchline.
“Maybe she’s going to do one of those cool pre-taped sketch things to support the host,” she suggested.
The sketch saved one more surprise for its ending.
As the familiar Law & Order sound played, Swift appeared holding her Scottish Fold cat.
Her name?
Olivia Benson.
Swift named the cat after Hargitay’s SVU character years ago, reflecting the friendship that eventually developed between the singer and actress.
Hargitay returned the favor in 2023 when she named her own Siamese cat Karma, after Swift’s song.
So while Swift never stepped onto the Emmy red carpet on September 14, she managed to appear on the broadcast anyway.
Her actual evening was unfolding in Kansas City.
She was back at Arrowhead.
She was watching her husband begin another NFL season.
She was surrounded by the Kelce family.
And sitting beside her was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
For several days, the internet tried to figure out what Taylor Swift and Tom Cruise could possibly have been discussing so intensely.
The theories ranged from movies and Scientology to elaborate jokes about Cruise recruiting Swift for something mysterious.
The real answer, according to Cruise, was considerably more ordinary.
Taylor Swift was teaching Tom Cruise about football.
