In 1991, at only 29 years old and near the height of his Hollywood career, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The diagnosis was devastating, particularly because nobody could tell him exactly what the future would look like.
Years later, while accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Governors Awards in November 2022, Fox spoke openly about what doctors told him.
“I was told I only had 10 years left to work.”
He also described the emotional uncertainty that followed.
“The hardest part of my diagnosis was grappling with the certainty of the diagnosis and the uncertainty of the situation.”
Fox said the diagnosis itself was definite, but how quickly the disease would progress remained impossible to predict. He spent years struggling to accept what was happening before publicly revealing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998.
Through those difficult years, Pollan stayed.
‘She Would Have Been Forgiven’ for Walking Away
Fox has never treated his wife’s loyalty as something he was automatically entitled to.
Speaking about their marriage in a 2023 interview, he acknowledged just how much Parkinson’s had required from Pollan as well as from him.
“She’s an amazing person and has gone through a lot. It’s no small thing.”
Fox said neither of them knew what the future would bring when he was diagnosed.
But Pollan had already made a commitment to him through their wedding vows — through sickness and health.
Then Fox made a particularly emotional admission.
“At any time, she would have been forgiven to say, ‘I’m just gonna step out.’ But she didn’t do that.”
Instead, Pollan remained beside him as Parkinson’s increasingly affected his movement, balance and ability to work.
38 Years of Marriage
Their marriage has now lasted nearly four decades.
On July 16, 2026, Fox and Pollan celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary.
Fox marked the milestone with a touching message to his wife, writing that every day felt like a holiday and anniversaries were even better. Pollan shared her own affectionate anniversary tribute in return.
The couple also share four children — Sam, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, and Esmé — and have built a family life that Fox repeatedly credits Pollan with holding together.
When discussing his wife with People, Fox summed up her influence on their family in just a few words.
“Any good in our family, anything good that we do, comes from her.”
Pollan has said their lasting relationship isn’t based on some complicated secret. Listening to one another, being there when needed and also knowing when to give each other space have all played a role.
A Love Story Still Being Written
More than three decades after his diagnosis, Fox continues his Parkinson’s advocacy while Pollan remains alongside him.
The couple appeared together at the Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026, where Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his contributions to Parkinson’s research and advocacy. During his emotional remarks, he once again recognized the sacrifices made by Pollan and their children throughout his journey.
Their story has never been about pretending those years were easy.
It is about what happened when life became harder than either of them could have imagined.
Fox has openly acknowledged that Pollan could have chosen another path.
She stayed.
Thirty-eight years after they exchanged their vows, they are still walking through life together — a reminder that sometimes the most powerful love stories aren’t defined by perfect moments.
