Six men in work jackets stood around the desk, all trying to look less overwhelming than they naturally were. Luis stepped forward first, and then Marcus — Jonathan’s old supervisor — held out an envelope with my name written on it in my husband’s handwriting.

“Your husband kept this in his locker,” Marcus said. “He told us if the right day ever came, we’d know. Yesterday Teresa told Luis what Letty did. Luis told us. And we came, because that’s what you do for family.”

Marcus told me Jonathan had talked about us constantly — Letty’s soccer cleats, my blueberry pancakes, the extra lunch I always packed in case someone needed it. Then his face softened further. When Jonathan got sick, he’d quietly started a jar in the break room for families being crushed by cancer bills. He called it the Keep Going Fund.

Marcus set a check on the desk for Jenna. She tried to refuse it, but I stopped her. “If Jonathan started that fund, he started it for families exactly like yours,” I said. Then I turned to Brennan: if the school had known Millie was hiding in a bathroom, this room couldn’t be where the story ended.

Brennan agreed. The boys involved were being suspended from activities pending a review, and he said the school intended to start something larger. I asked that the fund keep Jonathan’s name, and Jenna, pressing a tissue to her mouth, said she’d be honored.

Marcus read a note Jonathan had left with him: “Letty will always lead with her heart. Piper will pretend she’s fine and carry too much by herself. Don’t let either one of them stand alone if you can help it.”
