Field arrived at the ceremony nominated for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, and her emotion on stage came before viewers understood what it was tied to. She went on to win lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, becoming the oldest performer ever to take the category.
Holding her Emmy, Field reflected on more than six decades in the arts and spoke of voices mattering, turning her win into something larger than a personal milestone. Her tears, though, traced back further — to a friendship with Dolly Parton that began on the set of Steel Magnolias in 1989.
Field remembered Dolly as genuine, humble, supportive and blisteringly funny, describing a bond that had lasted almost forty years since they worked alongside Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts. Those were not tears for a former co-star, but for a friend.
Reba McEntire’s Tribute to Dolly Parton
Reba McEntire followed Field’s speech with a performance stripped of the usual country staging — just an orchestra, a white gown, and the quiet the ceremony had already settled into. She sang Dolly’s “Appalachian Memories,” a track from the 1983 album Burlap & Satin that was never released as a single.
The song carried its own history on that stage. Dolly had first performed “Appalachian Memories” at the Emmys in 1983, and the ceremony revisited that footage before Reba sang it again forty-three years later, with images of Dolly appearing behind her.
McEntire closed the performance simply: “I love you Dolly.” Some of the jewelry she wore that night had been loaned to her by Dolly’s family, so as she sang, she carried something that had once belonged to the woman she was honoring.
The 1991 Plane Crash and Dolly’s Gift
The performance carried weight beyond the song itself. In March 1991, a charter plane carrying members of Reba McEntire’s touring band crashed after leaving San Diego, killing eight of her band and crew members along with the two pilots.
Returning to work afterward was difficult, and people across country music reached out to help. Dolly Parton was among them, reportedly telling Reba, “Here, take my band,” offering her own musicians so Reba could return to performing.
Reba has said she did not want to continue her shows, but Dolly convinced her the show had to go on, even though it would not be easy. That gesture, more than thirty-five years old, was still part of the story when Reba stood on the Emmy stage singing for her.
A Legacy Remembered Across Generations
Dolly’s history with television long predated the 2026 ceremony. Her first Primetime Emmy nomination came after appearing on a Cher ABC special, and later nominations followed for projects including Christmas of Many Colors and Mountain Magic Christmas, with a win in 2021 as executive producer of Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.

Through Sandollar Productions, the company she co-founded with Sandy Gallin, Dolly helped back the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film and the television series that followed — a connection she later described by calling the show “a wonderful little show.”
