…help him sleep, he insisted, even though David never changes anything without a reason. He sticks to the same toothpaste, the same parking spot, even the same coffee mug he’s had for years, so his sudden persistence left me uneasy from the very first night we switched.
Something Felt Off From the Start
Everything about my new side felt wrong, while David fell asleep almost instantly. The next morning he asked how I’d slept. “Not great,” I admitted. “Give it a couple of nights,” he said, and the phrase stuck with me.
By the second night I asked to switch back. “No,” he said. “I slept better like this.” I also noticed that every time I shifted in bed, he stirred awake beside me.
A Midnight Disappearance
Around midnight I got up to use the bathroom. When I came back, David was sitting up in bed. “What’s going on?” I asked. “Nothing. I thought you were heading downstairs,” he said. “Why would I do that?” He only shrugged.
The next day, while he was at work, I checked my old nightstand — under it, inside the drawer. There was nothing unusual there at all.
The Third Night
I woke after three in the morning and realized David wasn’t in bed. The bathroom was empty. Then I heard rustling downstairs, a cabinet creak open, and the back door swing shut.
When he crept back upstairs, he paused seeing me awake. “Where were you?” “Just downstairs.” “You went outside.” “Only for a minute.” He got back into bed without explaining further, and I couldn’t fall back asleep.
A Confession Left Hanging
The next evening I confronted him. “Enough already. Why the switch?” “I told you,” he said. “No, you offered a flimsy excuse,” I answered, pointing out how strange the last few nights had been.
“Is there something you’re not sharing with me?” I asked. He looked at me for a long moment, then said, “Yes.” My heart sank.
“Just stay here,” he said, and left the room. I heard him moving toward the back of the house, a door opening, then another, while I stood frozen imagining every possibility.
When David finally came back, he was holding something. The moment I saw it, everything about the last three nights suddenly made sense to me — though what exactly he was holding stayed between the two of us in that instant, unspoken.
