A Familiar Tex-Mex Name Is Trying Again-

Chi-Chi’s was founded in Minnesota in 1975 by restaurateur Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee.

At its height, the chain grew to more than 200 locations.

The revived version is being led by Marno’s son, Michael McDermott, who has attempted to preserve recognizable elements of the old Chi-Chi’s while updating the restaurant for today’s customers.

That includes familiar favorites such as chimichangas, Nachos Grande, seafood enchiladas, and fried ice cream alongside newer menu items and a refreshed interior.

For longtime customers, that’s a powerful advantage.

A completely new restaurant has to create an identity from scratch.

Chi-Chi’s already has decades of memories attached to its name.

But Nostalgia Only Gets People Through the Door

The difficult part is convincing them to return.

Today’s restaurant market is very different from the one in which Chi-Chi’s originally became successful.

Customers can compare restaurants instantly, read reviews before leaving home, and publicly share disappointing experiences within minutes.

Mexican and Tex-Mex-inspired food is also widely available, giving diners far more alternatives.

That means a familiar logo and fried ice cream might generate an initial rush of curiosity, but food quality, service, value, and consistency will determine whether the revival has staying power.

The initial reopening certainly attracted attention, with diners reportedly facing long waits when the St. Louis Park restaurant debuted.

Nearly a year later, the restaurant has continued adjusting its menu, including bringing back several older dishes that customers repeatedly requested.

The Brand Also Has Difficult History

Chi-Chi’s comeback inevitably carries baggage.

The original U.S. chain struggled financially and ultimately disappeared following bankruptcy and a devastating 2003 hepatitis A outbreak connected to contaminated green onions served at a Pennsylvania location.

The final U.S. restaurants closed in 2004.

For a revived restaurant carrying the same famous name, that history makes trust and operational consistency especially important.

The new Chi-Chi’s cannot simply recreate the past.

It has to prove that the brand belongs in the present.

Can Chi-Chi’s Become a Chain Again?

For now, the revival remains relatively small.

The St. Louis Park restaurant is the flagship and currently the company’s only open location, although the business has expressed ambitions to expand.

That makes this restaurant something of a test.

If longtime fans return after their nostalgic first visit—and younger diners begin developing their own attachment to the brand—Chi-Chi’s could have the foundation for a genuine second chapter.

If not, the comeback may remain an interesting reminder of how powerful restaurant nostalgia can be.

Either way, Chi-Chi’s has already accomplished something unusual.

After roughly twenty years away, people can once again walk into an American Chi-Chi’s, order some of the dishes they remember, and find out whether the experience they missed still works today.

Nostalgia brought the name back.

What happens next will depend on what’s actually served at the table.
