Even in the dim light, the object looked strange. It was made of plastic and covered with pointed extensions that gave it an almost futuristic appearance. For a moment, I genuinely had no idea what I was holding.

I carried it into the hallway, where the emergency light gave me a better look.

That didn’t help much.

There was no label.

No logo.

No switch.

No instructions.

Nothing explaining what it was supposed to do.

The more I examined it, the more mysterious it seemed.

My son enjoys gaming, technology, and making creative little projects, so part of me assumed it probably belonged to one of those hobbies. Still, I couldn’t understand why something this bizarre-looking had been shoved beneath his bed.

I considered putting it back and simply asking him about it in the morning.

Then curiosity won.

I returned to his room and gently woke him.

He opened his eyes, clearly confused.

“What?”

I held up the object.

He stared at it.

They were decorative.

He simply thought they looked cool.

The mysterious object I had been examining like evidence from a crime scene was basically a homemade stand for holding a video-game controller.

Suddenly, everything made perfect sense.

And especially the fact that it had been sitting beneath the bed.

I started laughing too.
