With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a beloved star. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten

They described Fabares as a devoted wife and cherished stepmother, as well as a beloved daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member, and loyal friend.

“Her warmth, generosity, humor, and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.”

Her family continued by reflecting on the qualities they said defined Fabares throughout her life.

“We will remember Shelley for her kindness, loyalty, wit, courage, and beautiful spirit. We will miss her deeply—not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives.”

Born January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, California, Fabares entered show business while she was still a child. She made her television debut at only 10 years old with an appearance on The Loretta Young Show.

It wasn’t long before the young actress landed the role that would transform her career.

Fabares was cast as Mary Stone, the teenage daughter of Donna and Alex Stone, on the hugely popular family sitcom The Donna Reed Show. Her performance turned her into one of television’s most recognizable young stars and helped establish an image that audiences would remember for decades.

But acting wasn’t her only talent.

During the height of her early television fame, Fabares launched a successful recording career. In 1962, she released “Johnny Angel,” which became a massive hit and climbed all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song became permanently associated with her and remains one of the defining pop recordings of the early 1960s.

Fabares’ career soon expanded to the big screen, where she worked alongside one of the biggest entertainers in history: Elvis Presley.

She appeared opposite Presley in three movies — Girl Happy, Spinout, and Clambake. Those films further cemented her status as a recognizable Hollywood star during an era filled with some of entertainment’s most enduring names.

While many performers who become famous as teenagers struggle to find equally successful roles as adults, Fabares managed to reinvent herself.

Decades after The Donna Reed Show, she found another defining television role when she joined the sitcom Coach as Christine Armstrong, the sophisticated and strong-willed girlfriend and eventual wife of Craig T. Nelson’s Hayden Fox.

The role introduced Fabares to an entirely new generation.

Her work on Coach earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations, demonstrating that the actress who had first captured audiences as a teenager still had the ability to stand out decades later.

Her extensive career also included appearances on One Day at a Time and numerous other television series and films, while voice acting became another part of her later work.

Away from the screen, Fabares shared a long marriage with actor and activist Mike Farrell, widely remembered for playing Captain B.J. Hunnicutt on M*A*S*H.

Although Fabares did not have biological children, she became stepmother to Farrell’s two children from his previous marriage to actress Judy Farrell. Family remained an important part of the life she built away from cameras.

Her journey was also marked by serious health challenges. Fabares underwent a liver transplant in 2000 after being diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, later becoming an advocate for organ donation.

Through it all, she maintained a place in the memories of viewers who had followed her through remarkably different stages of her career.

For some, Shelley Fabares will forever be Mary Stone, the teenager who helped make The Donna Reed Show a television classic. Others remember the young singer behind “Johnny Angel” or the actress appearing alongside Elvis Presley.

And for another generation entirely, she will always be Christine Armstrong from Coach.

Few performers successfully remain part of popular culture across so many decades, but Fabares managed to do exactly that.

Her family’s farewell makes clear, however, that behind those television characters, hit records, Emmy nominations, and Hollywood memories was a woman whose greatest impact may have been felt by those closest to her.

Shelley Fabares leaves behind a remarkable entertainment legacy spanning childhood stardom, music, movies, television, and more than half a century in the public eye.

She was 82.
