For the next week, I struggled through sleepless nights while Daniel posted smiling photographs from Paris, Rome and Barcelona.

Daniel immediately tried to blame me for taking the children.

My attorney documented that Daniel voluntarily left the country for a leisure trip while his wife was recovering from childbirth and caring for one-month-old twins.

The judge granted me primary custody and required Daniel to attend parenting classes before progressing through supervised visitation.

For the first time, there was no exhausted wife standing behind him to quietly handle everything.

During those early visits, Daniel struggled.

Two babies cried at once. Bottles needed preparing. Diapers needed changing. Sleep schedules collapsed.

He finally began understanding the responsibility he had simply walked away from.

Our divorce was eventually finalized in Multnomah County.

I moved into a modest apartment with Lily and Noah and concentrated on giving them something far more important than appearances:

Daniel continued attending his supervised visits and slowly became more capable of caring for his children instead of disappearing whenever things became difficult.

When the twins turned one, he attended their small birthday celebration.

He acknowledged how much I had carried alone and expressed genuine respect for the strength it had taken to rebuild our lives.

Daniel still had growing to do.

But that was no longer my responsibility.
