Brand said at the time, explaining that Goodyear had already been experiencing increasing forgetfulness.
“We now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.”
Although the former Coronation Street star initially continued enjoying outings and meeting people, Brand warned that public recognition could sometimes become confusing for her, particularly when she was tired.

By March 2024, he admitted that the changes had become increasingly difficult to witness.
“All of this is now slowly fading away and it’s extremely painful for me to watch this deterioration.”
Goodyear, who was once meticulous about her appearance and famous for her glamorous outfits, makeup, and love of leopard print, gradually lost interest in the things that had previously been such a recognizable part of her personality.
Brand revealed that she had also begun struggling to recognize people, sometimes referring to everyone simply as “Scott.”

Mobility became more difficult too, and Goodyear began using a wheelchair. For Brand, those changes meant losing many of the everyday experiences they had once enjoyed together — holidays, dinners, shopping trips, and simply walking hand in hand.
He eventually stepped away from work to become her full-time caregiver.
At first, Brand believed he could manage everything himself. The couple had always valued their privacy, and accepting outside support did not come naturally. But trying to handle her care alone began affecting his own health.
“For me, the hardest part was accepting and coming to terms with the diagnosis.”
Brand has since encouraged other caregivers not to wait too long before seeking assistance.
The Alzheimer’s Society became an important source of support for the couple. Brand described the organization as a “lifeline,” particularly after a Dementia Adviser helped him navigate finances, care arrangements, and long-term planning.

Goodyear and Brand also supported the charity’s “The Long Goodbye” campaign, narrated by Colin Firth, which highlighted how dementia can gradually take away familiar pieces of someone’s personality and daily life.
Then, in March 2025, Brand shared an unusually candid photograph of his wife.
Goodyear was pictured seated in a gray hoodie with her long silver hair pulled away from her face. She smiled at the camera, appearing relaxed after spending the day with her husband.
Brand captioned the since-deleted post:
“Just got home with my lovely wife and we’ve had a fantastic day together.”
The image quickly divided social media.

Some fans felt uncomfortable seeing the legendary actress looking so different from the glamorous Bet Lynch they remembered.
One commenter wrote:
“I feel absolutely DISGUSTED that Julie Goodyear’s husband would release that photo of her.”
Another said they preferred to remember Goodyear from her glamorous Coronation Street years.
But many others strongly defended Brand.
“Julie Goodyear’s husband did nothing wrong! She looks happy and cared for, what should he do, hide her away because it makes weirdos uncomfortable?”
Others who had personally experienced dementia in their families said they found the image touching rather than upsetting.
One person wrote:
“My mum had dementia, I personally think the picture is lovely, she looks happy in her own little world and still has a lovely sparkle about her.”
Brand’s devotion to Goodyear has remained evident throughout her illness.

In June 2024, marking their wedding anniversary, he shared a photograph from their wedding and wrote:
“17 years today me and my beautiful wife tied the knot and every day is still special.”
The couple first met in 1996 when Brand delivered plaster to a property Goodyear was renovating. They eventually married privately in 2007 despite an age difference of more than twenty years.
Before Brand, Goodyear had experienced several difficult relationships and three previous marriages. Her first marriage began in 1959 after she became pregnant at seventeen and ended several years later.
Today, however, Brand remains firmly by her side.
While dementia has changed much about the woman audiences remember from television, his recent updates have shown something that the illness has not completely erased: moments of connection, affection, and even happiness between two people facing an extraordinarily difficult reality together.
