No cause of death was immediately provided.

Born on July 6, 1932, in Glasgow, Scotland, Law did not originally imagine that acting would become her life’s work. She initially planned to pursue stage design, but her interest in performing eventually drew her in a different direction.

It proved to be the beginning of an extraordinary career.

Law began working professionally during the 1950s and went on to establish herself as a versatile performer capable of moving comfortably between theater, television and movies.

Over the decades, she appeared in numerous productions, including Much Ado About Nothing, The Time Machine and Nanny McPhee.

British television audiences also came to know her through appearances in popular programs including Midsomer Murders, Waking the Dead, Foyle’s War and Doc Martin.

Despite her considerable achievements, some of the most cherished moments of Law’s career came when acting became a family affair.

Law was married to actor and writer Eric Thompson, with whom she welcomed daughters Emma and Sophie Thompson. Eric died in 1982, but the family’s remarkable connection to the performing arts continued through their daughters.

Emma Thompson eventually became one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses and screenwriters, winning major international honors throughout her career. Sophie Thompson also established a successful acting career across theater, television and film.

Their mother’s career occasionally crossed paths with theirs.

Law appeared alongside Emma in several projects, including Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing and the family fantasy film Nanny McPhee.

Perhaps one of their most memorable collaborations came with The Winter Guest in 1997.

Directed by Alan Rickman, the drama featured Law and Emma playing mother and daughter, bringing their real-life family connection to the screen.

Law also worked alongside Sophie. Both actresses appeared in the 1996 period comedy Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, further demonstrating how deeply acting ran through the Thompson-Law family.

But Law’s creative life wasn’t limited to acting.

Away from the stage and cameras, she became an author and wrote several books and memoirs, giving readers another opportunity to experience her distinctive personality and perspective.

Her accomplishments eventually earned recognition beyond the entertainment industry.

In 2014, Law was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, honoring her contributions to drama and charitable work.

Even as she grew older, Law remained connected to acting.

Her final screen role came in the 2020 romantic comedy Then Came You, bringing to a close a professional journey that had begun more than six decades earlier.

Yet her legacy extends beyond a lengthy list of credits.

For generations of British television and theater viewers, Phyllida Law was a familiar and distinctive presence. For movie audiences, she became part of productions that continue to be discovered by new viewers. And through her collaborations with Emma and Sophie, audiences were given the unusual opportunity to watch members of one extraordinarily talented family performing together.

Law is survived by her daughters, Emma Thompson and Sophie Thompson, as well as her four grandchildren.

Her death brings the curtain down on a life deeply connected to storytelling, creativity and family.

From a young woman who initially imagined herself designing stages rather than standing on them to a respected actress whose career lasted more than six decades, Phyllida Law leaves behind an enduring body of work.

Rest in peace, Phyllida Law. Our condolences go to Emma, Sophie, her grandchildren and everyone who loved her.
