When the event coordinator approached for approval of the remaining upgrades, I canceled the premium bar and dessert table, kept the band only for the agreed time, and changed dinner to the basic menu. My mother immediately demanded to know why things were being removed. I calmly told her that if my children were not important enough for a proper place at her table, I was no longer comfortable financing an extravagant celebration.
