Two days later, I moved into Daniela’s home with Mateo and our daughters, Sofia, Valentina, Camila, and Renata. They could not understand why their father had suddenly disappeared. Ricardo avoided speaking with me directly, so I arranged a DNA test rather than continue defending myself against an accusation I knew was false. Javier visited during that week, confused by Ricardo’s sudden hostility and unaware that he had become the center of the suspicion. When the results arrived, they confirmed that Ricardo was Mateo’s biological father. I forwarded the document without commentary. Less than an hour later, Ricardo was at Daniela’s door asking for forgiveness.
The DNA result answered one question but left another: why did Mateo and Javier share such an unusual birthmark? Javier eventually revealed a family secret he had carried for years. Ricardo’s late father, Don Ernesto, was also Javier’s biological father, making the two men half brothers. But proof of my innocence could not instantly repair what his distrust had broken. I did not return home simply because he was sorry.
