    This Hollywood star’s real-life story is far more gripping than any of his movies

    Andrew McCarthy was one of the defining teen idols of the 1980s. With his tousled dark hair, boyish smile, and understated charm, he became the face of a generation through films like Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, Mannequin, and Weekend at Bernie’s. While millions of fans admired his seemingly perfect Hollywood life, the actor was privately fighting a battle that few people knew about.

    An Unlikely Road to Hollywood

    Born on November 29, 1962, in Westfield, New Jersey, Andrew McCarthy grew up in a middle-class family as the third of four sons. His mother worked for a newspaper, while his father was involved in investments and the stock market.

    Unlike many future stars, McCarthy had no connections to the entertainment industry and admitted he never expected fame to arrive so suddenly.
