A Love Story That Began in 1986
Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham first crossed paths at a charity event in 1986. What began as a friendship soon blossomed into a romantic relationship later that year, the same year The Oprah Winfrey Show debuted and launched Oprah into television history.
Six years later, Graham proposed, and many believed wedding bells were just around the corner.
Instead, the couple surprised everyone by calling off their engagement in 1993.
Although they decided not to marry, they never ended their relationship. Instead, they chose to continue building a life together on their own terms.
Oprah Explains Why She Never Married
Years after ending their engagement, Oprah shared that accepting Graham’s proposal had fulfilled an emotional need, but marriage itself wasn’t what she truly wanted.
“I realized I didn’t actually want a marriage. I wanted to be asked,”
she wrote in a 2020 essay for O, The Oprah Magazine.
She explained that being proposed to made her feel valued, but she also recognized that marriage would have required compromises she wasn’t prepared to make.
“I wanted to know he felt I was worthy of being his missus, but I didn’t want the sacrifices, the compromises, the day-in-day-out commitment required to make a marriage work. My life with the show was my priority, and we both knew it.”
They Believe Marriage Might Have Ended Their Relationship
By the time Oprah reflected on her decision, she and Graham had already spent more than 30 years together without ever saying “I do.”
In a 2019 interview with People, Oprah revealed that both of them believe their relationship survived precisely because they never married.
“Both he and I now say, ‘If we had married, we would not be together.'”
She described Graham as someone who has always supported her ambitions without trying to change who she is.
“He’s never demanding anything from me… He lets me be who I need to be in the world.”
According to Oprah, a traditional marriage may have created expectations that neither of them wanted.
She added that they each had different ideas about what married life would have looked like, and those differences could have ultimately driven them apart.
Why Oprah Chose Not to Have Children
Marriage wasn’t the only traditional milestone Oprah chose to forgo.
She has also spoken openly about her decision not to become a mother.
After interviewing thousands of people throughout her career, Oprah said she gained a profound appreciation for the responsibility of raising children.
“I realized… I’m talking to a lot of messed-up people, and they are messed up because they had mothers and fathers who were not aware of how serious that job is.”
She also admitted she admired women who dedicate themselves to raising children because she didn’t believe she could balance motherhood with the demanding career she had built.
A Rare Public Appearance Together
While Graham has remained an important part of Oprah’s life, the couple has increasingly kept their relationship away from public attention.
Their last widely photographed appearance together came during the Tyler Perry Studios Grand Opening Gala in 2019.
Now, nearly seven years later, they have appeared together once again.
The occasion was a reunion celebrating the team behind The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago.
Held at Reunion by Chef Art Smith on Navy Pier, the gathering brought together former producers and staff members ahead of the talk show’s upcoming 40th anniversary.
Former senior supervising producer Jill Van Lokeren shared photos from the event, including one featuring Oprah, Graham, and Chef Art Smith smiling together while standing beside a platter of fried chicken.
She captioned the post:
“15-year reunion for The Oprah Winfrey Show. The best segment 1 surprise guest showed up. A night of all love and pure joy. Forever grateful.”
Oprah also celebrated the milestone on social media, reflecting on how much time had passed since the show first premiered.
“I cannot even believe that as of next month, September 8, it will be 40 years since we first launched The Oprah Winfrey Show. Thank you for being the greatest team ever.”
A Relationship That Continues to Defy Expectations
While many celebrity couples share every milestone with the public, Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham have chosen a different approach. Their relationship has remained remarkably private, built on mutual respect, independence, and support rather than traditional expectations.
Nearly 40 years after they first met, they continue to demonstrate that lasting partnerships don’t always follow conventional rules—and that sometimes choosing the path that works best for two people is what allows love to endure.
