A Teen’s Fun DNA Test Pointed to Someone He Already Knew

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodAugust 15, 20263 Mins Read

    Then he clicked DNA Matches.

    The first name stopped him.

    Caleb.

His best friend since middle school.

    At first, Ethan laughed.

He assumed Caleb had taken the same test and the website was simply showing people he knew.

Then he read the line underneath.

    Shared DNA: approximately 25%.

    Possible relationship: Half sibling.

    Ethan stared at the screen.

    Caleb wasn’t a distant cousin.

According to the test, they could share a parent.

    He immediately called his mother.

When she entered his room, Ethan turned the laptop toward her.

“Mom… why does it say Caleb might be my brother?”

    She read the result twice.

    Then she sat down.

Ethan had never seen his mother look so confused.

That evening, she called Caleb’s mother, Julia.

There was a long silence on the other end.

    Then Julia asked one question.

    “What’s Ethan’s father’s full name?”

When she heard it, she began to cry.

Years before Ethan’s parents married, Julia had briefly dated the man who would later become Ethan’s father.

    The relationship ended.

Weeks later, Julia discovered she was pregnant.

She raised Caleb without involving him and eventually buried that chapter of her life.

What nobody could have predicted was that fifteen years later, their sons would meet on their own.

    And become best friends.

    Ethan called Caleb that night.

Neither boy knew what to say.

    Finally, Caleb laughed nervously.

“So all those times people said we looked like brothers…”

    Ethan started laughing too.

    The conversation didn’t solve everything.

There were difficult questions for the adults.

Why had Caleb never been told?

    Did Ethan’s father know?

    What would happen now?

But the boys agreed on one thing.

Whatever their parents needed to work through belonged to their parents.

    Their friendship belonged to them.

A second test later confirmed the relationship.

    Ethan and Caleb were half-brothers.

For several weeks, everything felt strange.

Then, slowly, it stopped feeling strange at all.

They still played the same games.

    Still argued over music.

Still sent each other ridiculous videos at midnight.

Months later, Ethan’s mother found the boys sitting together at the kitchen table.

Caleb was eating cereal straight from the box.

    Ethan looked at him.

    “You know what’s actually weird?”

    “What?”

“We became best friends before we knew.”

    Caleb shrugged.

“Maybe we just had good taste.”

    They both laughed.

The DNA test had uncovered a secret neither family expected.

But it hadn’t created the bond between Ethan and Caleb.

That part had happened years earlier.

The test simply gave that bond another name.

    Best friends.

And, as it turned out, brothers.
