    Grease-Free is My Ultimate Goal!

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodAugust 13, 20264 Mins Read

Over time, that buildup can turn into a sticky film that makes otherwise clean cabinets look dull and dirty.

Many people immediately reach for powerful degreasers and begin scrubbing, but there is another simple household method that may help with certain cabinet finishes. It uses two inexpensive ingredients you may already have at home: baking soda and a small amount of vegetable oil.

The reason cabinets become particularly greasy around the stove is fairly simple. Cooking releases tiny droplets of oil and grease into the air. Those particles eventually settle onto nearby surfaces.

Once grease reaches the cabinets, dust and other debris can stick to it, gradually creating the difficult-to-remove residue many homeowners recognize.

Aggressive scrubbing may remove the grime, but it can also damage some painted, laminated, or wooden finishes. Strong commercial products can present similar problems if they are not suitable for the cabinet material.

That is why gentler cleaning techniques are often worth considering.

One traditional household trick combines baking soda with vegetable oil.

Although adding oil to an already greasy cabinet might sound strange, oil can sometimes help loosen oily residue. Baking soda, meanwhile, provides mild abrasive action that helps lift sticky grime.

To try the method, place a small amount of baking soda into a bowl and mix it with approximately the same amount of vegetable oil.

A tablespoon of each is usually enough to begin with.

Stir the ingredients together until they form a thick paste.

Before applying it widely, however, test the mixture on a small, hidden section of the cabinet. Cabinet finishes differ considerably, and oil or baking soda may affect certain paints, varnishes, laminates, or unfinished woods.

Once you know the finish reacts well, apply a small amount of the paste to the greasy area using a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge.

There is no need for heavy pressure.

Gently work the mixture across the sticky surface and allow it to remain there for approximately five to ten minutes.

This gives the mixture time to loosen the accumulated residue.

Next, dampen a clean cloth with warm water and carefully wipe away the paste.

The softened grease should begin lifting from the surface without requiring excessive scrubbing.

If a particularly stubborn area remains, repeat the process rather than applying significantly more pressure.

After the grease has been removed, wipe the cabinet again with a clean cloth dampened only with warm water. This step is especially important because you do not want vegetable oil or baking soda residue remaining on the surface.

Finish by drying the cabinet thoroughly with a soft towel.

Regular maintenance can also prevent the problem from becoming difficult in the first place.

A quick wipe of cabinets near the stove after preparing greasy or fried foods can dramatically reduce buildup. Cleaning cooking splashes while they are fresh is generally easier than dealing with layers that have accumulated for months.

Using the range hood or kitchen ventilation system while cooking may also help reduce the amount of airborne grease that eventually lands on surrounding cabinets.

Pay particular attention to cabinet doors above and beside the stove, since these areas typically collect residue fastest.

It is also important to remember that not every cabinet should be cleaned in exactly the same way.

Painted wood, unfinished wood, laminate, thermofoil, and high-gloss cabinets can react differently to moisture, abrasives, and oils. Manufacturer cleaning instructions should take priority whenever they are available.

For some surfaces, a small amount of mild dish soap mixed with warm water may be the safer everyday option.

The baking soda and vegetable oil trick remains a popular household approach because it uses inexpensive ingredients and may loosen stubborn greasy buildup without relying on powerful chemical cleaners.

The key is using only a small amount, working gently, testing the method first, and thoroughly removing any oily residue afterward.

So the next time you notice a sticky layer forming on your kitchen cabinets, you may not need hours of aggressive scrubbing.

A little patience, a soft cloth, and two ordinary pantry ingredients could help bring back the cleaner, fresher appearance your cabinets once had.
