# My Sister-in-Law Told Her Sons to Smash Our New Car
The first sound I heard was glass breaking.
The second was my husband Martin shouting from the driveway.
“What the hell?”
I ran outside and stopped dead.
Bruno, my sister-in-law’s seven-year-old son, stood beside our brand-new crossover with a baseball bat hanging from both hands.
His younger brother, Nick, stood several feet away.
Neither boy was crying.
Neither looked injured.
But our car looked as though someone had deliberately attacked it.
The passenger-side mirror dangled by its wiring. A huge spiderweb crack stretched across the windshield, and the driver’s door had several deep dents.
Martin reached the car first.
“Oh my God.”
He touched the cracked windshield and immediately pulled his hand back.
The car was nine days old.
Nine.
We had spent three years saving for it.
Then Megan, Martin’s sister, walked up behind her sons holding a glass of lemonade.
She looked at the damage.
