With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this beloved actress who gave us so much

News of Hall’s passing was announced by actor Robin Askwith, who was in a relationship with her for three years during the 1970s. In an emotional tribute, Askwith reflected not only on her talent as an actress but also on the remarkable energy, courage, and warmth that defined her as a person.

Hall launched her acting career in the late 1960s, steadily establishing herself as one of Britain’s recognizable television performers. Her breakthrough arrived in 1971 with the popular sitcom On the Buses, opening the door to a wide variety of roles across British television.

Science fiction fans also remember Hall for appearing in the 1973 Doctor Who serial Carnival of Monsters, where she portrayed Shirna, a carnival performer and glamorous assistant. Although her role was relatively brief, it became one of the memorable appearances in the long-running series.

She achieved even greater recognition playing Shirley Johnson in the hit sitcom Citizen Smith. As the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay’s outspoken revolutionary character, Wolfie Smith, Hall became a familiar face to millions of viewers. Their on-screen chemistry eventually developed into a real-life romance, and the couple married in 1974.

Their marriage lasted until 1980, when Lindsay left the relationship and later began a relationship with actress Diana Weston.

Throughout her career, Hall remained a constant presence on British television, appearing in many of the country’s best-known series. Her extensive list of credits included The Bill, Poirot, Inspector Morse, Grange Hill, Casualty, Silent Witness, EastEnders, and Lucky Feller.

She also enjoyed success on the big screen, appearing in films such as To Catch a Spy, The Love Ban, and Three for All.

Interestingly, Hall almost became one of Doctor Who‘s most famous companions. Before Katy Manning was cast as Jo Grant, Hall was among the actresses considered for the role. Although she ultimately did not receive the part, producer Barry Letts clearly remembered her talent and later cast her in Carnival of Monsters.

Outside of entertainment, Hall pursued a second career in public service. In 1997, she stood as the Labour Party candidate for Canterbury in the general election before later serving on Kent County Council, where she became leader of the Labour group.

She was also an outspoken supporter of greater female representation in politics.

While balancing political responsibilities, Hall also raised her two sons and continued accepting acting roles, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to both public service and the performing arts.

Her passing represents the loss of a performer whose work spanned generations of British television. Whether appearing in comedy, drama, crime series, or science fiction, Hall brought authenticity, warmth, and unmistakable charm to every performance.

For those who knew her personally, Robin Askwith’s heartfelt tribute captures the lasting impression she left behind—not only as an accomplished actress but as someone whose spirit remained unforgettable.

Cheryl Hall leaves behind a rich legacy of performances that will continue to be enjoyed by audiences for years to come.
