Serena considered ignoring him.
Instead, she attended with her assistant Brooke and business associate Malcolm Foster. She wore a simple white dress and entered without trying to compete with the spectacle around her.
Damian and his girlfriend, Paisley Abbott, immediately began making pointed remarks about Serena’s appearance and supposedly diminished life.
Serena did not answer their insults.
She knew something Damian did not.
His struggling family enterprise, the Croft Group, was seeking a multimillion-dollar rescue package from Helios Capital.
And Serena was the founder and chief executive officer of Helios.
Later that evening, Damian gathered his attorneys and investors, including senior investor Ernesto Galvan, inside a private conference room to finalize the proposed financing.
Serena joined them.
Damian initially assumed she had followed him simply to interfere. But before negotiations could proceed, Brooke presented evidence that required immediate attention.
Paisley had allegedly been communicating defamatory claims about Serena to a tabloid journalist. More importantly for the transaction, those communications raised concerns under the reputational and disclosure provisions governing the proposed investment.
The room became quiet.
Serena did not celebrate.
“This isn’t personal,” she told them. “Helios cannot invest millions while serious governance questions remain unanswered.”
The meeting was suspended pending further review.
Damian finally began to understand why Serena was sitting at the table.
When guests later gathered for the expected announcement of the investment, Serena avoided turning the evening into a spectacle. She simply confirmed that Helios Capital would not approve the financing under the existing conditions.
An independent audit would be required. The company’s leadership structure would need temporary oversight, and false public claims connected to the negotiations would have to be corrected.
Damian protested, accusing Serena of using her position to punish him for their divorce.
She looked at him calmly.
“If this were revenge, I wouldn’t be sitting here discussing how to preserve your company,” she said. “I would simply walk away.”
That distinction mattered.
The subsequent audit revealed serious weaknesses inside the Croft Group, and Damian was temporarily removed from executive responsibilities while the company underwent restructuring.
Serena insisted that ordinary employees should not lose their livelihoods because of failures at the top. Helios eventually approved a carefully supervised restructuring plan that protected viable parts of the business while imposing stronger financial controls.
Damian faced the consequences of his own decisions, but Serena refused to make his suffering her measure of success.
Months later, she helped establish a financial education program for women rebuilding their lives after financial hardship, offering practical training in budgeting, accounting, and small-business management.
Her relationship with Malcolm also developed slowly, with neither of them rushing to turn companionship into dependence.
Looking back, Serena understood that the most important moment had not been revealing who she was.
It had been refusing to become what Damian expected.
He invited her hoping to see a wounded woman desperate to prove herself.
She left knowing she had nothing to prove.
